Research Sources/Tools for Family Historians #1

A few weeks late this but Munki asked me to do a little piece on various places of interest in Leeds for family researchers.I though i would also include places on the web that are of use,IGI for example.If anyone can come up with some examples and show them as a new thread under the FH and number them accordingly asResearch Sources/Tools for Family Historians #( ) it should be easier for anyone looking at the Family History section to be able to see quite easily particular avenues of research.Ill start it of with a good one.Its maybe for those who are a little further down the road with FH,and may allow a researcher to put some meat on the bones of their ancestors.Its a site called a2a,and it basically has an inventory of what various archives/repositories up and down the country have in their collections.Its good because its search facility allows you to enter surnames etc and it will search the entire database,so if you have an uncommon surname then you may have some results,however if you are doing Smith then its a little harder.Anyway heres the linkhttp://www.a2a.org.uk/default.asp

Just thought some of you might want to know - Genes Reunited have free access to the 1911 census until 18th November. I'm finding it quite useful.

It's not your fault, glad you pointed it out, I just think it's cheeky that they say "you can see your ancestors return in their own hand" then it's just the transcript from the census taker.

Findmypast also doing 1911 census free for a while,much more dependable.Though i subscribe to Gens i dont touch their records of cenus and PR,Ancestry is much better,though not perfect.Findmypast seems more accurate but limited in its scope of records [/quote And both FMP & Genes Reunited are owned by the same company Brightsolid Well if they were clever they would amalgamate the two,however,what would probably happen is that those people who have their whole and ongoing tree on Genes and suscribe to Ancestry for online records,such as myself,would probably stop using Genes and would go to Ancestry.This is because Genes is only £9 a year (i think) for you to build your tree and make contact with other researchers.Though not perfect it is a simple tree builder that they have on Genes when compared to other tree builders,such as Ancestry's,which is why Genes appeals to those just starting out.A years subscription to Findmypast for a Britain Full Subscription is £110.If Genes and Findmypast were amalgamated then they would charge the Findmypast subscription at the very least.Ancestry is £107 and has many many more records on it.But paying both subscriptions would not only be expensive but pointless as Ancestry has just about everything Findmypast has record wise and more besides.As i have pointed out Ancestrys accuracy transcription of old records does have some issues,but if you are ready to accept that you cant take everything at face value and additional research in the relevant record office may be required then you are fine.
