Have we not touched on this before? It certainly shows on the 1953 map and here to the east of Markham Avne in c. 1980.I know someone who lives nearby - question is asked! EDIT: Blessed server error still try later!

Having looked at the works mapping and google it seems to be culverted all the way after Gledhow Valley Road. http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&sourc ... 6,,0,-1.56

Maybe 6 -7 years ago, I was sitting at the lights, Fforde Green going down to town, with cloudburst weather, clearly observed was a torrent of water coming past me joining another from Harehills lane. At the junction it travelled across towrds Harehills Avne and turned sharp left in the hollow, clearly following what was at one time, its natural course. Shows you can't change nature with just a pipe can youResident agrees Cardi, sure it ran behind houses but piped sometime ago (had to think though - out of site out of mind?)

Cardiarms wrote: It's on the 1906 map and Leodis has pictures from 1947. It joined Lady Beck at the North end of Regent Street. Has it all been culverted now? It starts at Moor Allerton and winds it's way to gledhow Valley where it feeds and then emanates from the lake. It disappears behind houses at the Harehills end of GVR and I think it is open at the bottom of some gardens before entering a culvert to turn south and head for Leeds. In "Brook"field avenue it was open in the past, but as you can see it's been culverted to accomodate car parking and garages, and back yards. After there it crossed under Harehills lane and you can see how all the streets either side of it's line tend to stop dead either side of the culvert showing how it was an open beck at one time. Now there's fencing and extended back yards over the culvert.Down near Gathorne Street the land becomes open and green and I felt I may catch a bit of open beck there, with the lie of the land falling down from two sides to what could be an open stream, but on close inspection the culvert continues. Over to Roseville Road and the beck shows no sign at all of existence. The land is flat and the newer industrial units are sat on top of it.FINALLY on Bristol Street just by the Roscoe it emerges from a culvert and guided by a stone channel, goes under a small bridge and promptly dissapears into Sheepscar beck. After that the conjoined beck goes down Mabgate under a delightful iron bridge (I am to learn osting pics soon!) nicely decorated in Hope St by the Hope Foundry. So there is only the last 50 yeards of Gipton beck open!

Well researched and documented there Parksider, nice one I've been trying to take a closer look at the Gipton beck since this Autumn, we've had nothing but heavy rain and floods, next comes the artic cold blast to scupper things further.I have got a few pics saved up for when i've finally finished, there's lots of interesting pipes, bars and bridges along the Gledhow beck before it empties into the lake. I presume then it becomes the Gipton beck when it leaves the lake at the far end?Your right Parksider, the Gipton beck 'did' have a 100 yard long open section. It's very hard to get to or see. It ran between gardens between Gipton spa bath and Wellhouse drive. The only place to spot it was the small bridge on Wellhouse drive, you can see the beck runs under this bridge marked by the gap in the fences on Google street view herehttp://snipurl.com/u4dn3I say it 'did' have an open section, because when i looked at it in the Autumn it had just had a new plastic type culvert section added, this would be secured in place and covered over, I guess the last bit of open beck has now gone underground too.You can see the new culvert been constructed herehttp://www.flickr.com/photos/phill_dvsn/428542 ... cretleedsI was really lucky to catch this been built.I also took a look higher up at Gledhow beck before it hits the lake. There''s some interesting stuff to look at.A nice bridge crosses the beck in the woods between Lincombe drive and Gledhow Valley road herehttp://www.flickr.com/photos/phill_dvsn/428549 ... etleedsThe small pipe on the right is overflow sewerage from the drains, this isn't good feeding into the River Aire eventually. This drain is blasted by high power jets around twice a year. the lake is black and stinks for days/weeks afterwards. The same bridge taken at night with a torch to make it look pretty http://www.flickr.com/photos/phill_dvsn ... tleedsNext stop is the bridge over Gledhow lane at the bottom of Little Switzerland, You can see old and new construction nicely one you step inside.http://www.flickr.com/photos/phill_dvsn ... retleedsAt one time this was just a small bridge under Gledhow lane. A new RCP pipe around 50 yards long has been constructed that crosses under Gledhow Valley road.http://www.flickr.com/photos/phill_dvsn ... retleedsIt makes me think that this sudden meander as the pipe crosses under the road wasn't the original course of the beck.http://www.flickr.com/photos/phill_dvsn ... tleedsNext stop down is the overflow, and silt trap as the lake empties into the underground section towards the Wellhouse drive 'open section'http://www.flickr.com/photos/phill_dvsn ... tleedsI've a few more shots of all this saved up for when i finish my 'investigations' lol.But the next set of pics i have of the Gipton beck is where it emerges into the open once again and joins the Meanwood/Ladywell beck near the New Roscoe, Sheepscar as Parksider rightly says. The pic is herehttp://www.flickr.com/photos/phill_dvsn/450694 ... 853723/The Gipton beck is the one coming in on the right, interesting to see it's nothing more than a trickle on this shot. This is the Gipton beck at the back of the old Newton picture palace on Roseville roadhttp://www.flickr.com/photos/phill_dvsn/450727 ... 55853723/I always thought the Gipton beck resurfaced at the back of the Gaiety too. I've heard a few people say they've seen it there. I have had looked twice before as i've passed before, but i couldn't find it either??*I can't upload my pics to S.L so if anyone wants to do it for me, then great!!*
