Platforms, interchanges and closures

Post by tyke bhoy »

From a variety of sources.

Leeds Station Bus Interchange is closed for most of the year as it is undergoing a refurbishment. That must be at lest the third since it was introuduced and once again New Station Street becomes taxi only.

At the same time and with no timescale I have come across there will be a "glass ceiling" installed on the main concourse. Renders of the Platform building (refurbished City House) did show a glass ceiling but I had just though that may be artistic licence.

A Platform Zero is being installed in the station. Well actually where the longstay car park is. The car Park will only be restored presumably partly over the station once work on the platform has finished in 2020 or 2021. Other platforms in the vicinity are also being extended to take longer trains. I can only think the London trains will be pushed there as the trains that already operate from 1,2,3 etc. towards Skipton are already blooming long.

The YEP article dated 16.11.18 stated that New Station St was to pedestrianised and that it was " unclear " where the bus stops and taxi rank would relocate to.

It would appear that the affects of drugs and strong drink consumed at the planning meeting are diminishing.

Hmmm. The original article to which you refer is here
https://www.yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk/ ... -1-9448467
On searching for that I came across this
https://www.yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk/ ... -1-9542677
which, while confirming most of my original post, still has the theory that part of New Station Street will remain closed to traffic permanently. How that would work I have no idea, unless taxis departing the station were looped back on the right and out on to Boer Lane. That combined with all the buses having to use it would gridlock the Mill Street dogleg down to Swinegate. It will pretty much be gridlocked for the next 8 months with just the extra buses using it.

Anyway it looks like its just the big layby in front of the entrances that is being paved

PS the searches that brought up the above also brought up that the last diversion of buses only ended 18 months ago, although admittedly that was not to refurbish the interchange but for the City House conversion.

The fiasco at the other side of the station at the Aire Street entrance to the car park which has steadily deteriorated since the big redevelopment two decades ago suggests to me that nobody has much idea what they are doing.

Sorry to go off the subject but I wonder if anyone could answer me this. In the 1950s I would come up on the Train to my beloved Leeds on the Train, I think "The Devonian" and as the train slowed down coming into the station There was a sign "Watney's Wall"I down on the right hand side would be stood ready to get off. although I used to get off the train on the left side so I never ever saw a Pub in Leeds that sold "W.R B". Must have been a City Centre Boozer.

Agreed. It is currently being exacerbated by the narrowing of Wellington Street to accommodate the refurbishment of the Majestk building which ad a comment on the yourvoice link (of my earlier post) says seems to be going nowhere.

Much of the rest of the problem appears to be the serial misuse of the pick-up/drop-off point although it is the pick-ups that are the issue. The pick-ups are meant to be of people already there or sheltering from the elements just inside the station not for people who are just passing Stevenage on a train from Kings Cross. The worst culprits, though obviously not as per my extrem exageration, appear to be private hires.

I suspect that part of the original deal was that picking up and dropping off would be robustly monitored by the British Transport Police. That didn't last long and for a while it was done by station staff but my impression now is that nobody could care less if the city centre is gridlocked by a couple of ignorant dolts blocking the drop off/ pick up point.
