Re: Old Restaurants
There used to be an excellent Chinese restaurant at the top of the Grand Arcade/New Briggate, next to the Grand Theatre - I believe it was called Golden Ring, but its a long time ago.
There's nothing like keeping the past alive - it makes us relieved to reflect that any bad times have gone, and happy to relive all the joyful and fascinating experiences of our own and other folks' earlier days.

Re: Old Restaurants
Can anyone remember the name of a cafe that stood in the unit where Greggs is now at the bottom of the headrow in the Light? Was there for years, and I last was in there circa 1996-1998. Proper cafe, glass front? Would be the unit facing costa coffee on the junction of the headrow and park row. Would have been demolished when the Light was built? Better still, any pictures of it?

Was it the one with a mezzanine floor? Flight of stairs up to an extra eating area. Can't remember the name thoughLeigh wrote:Can anyone remember the name of a cafe that stood in the unit where Greggs is now at the bottom of the headrow in the Light? Re: Old Restaurants
I think it might be the Headrow Coffee House, as featured on Leodis:

http://www.leodis.net/display.aspx?reso ... SPLAY=FULL I think demolished is slightly overstating it While the shops may have been closed to refurbish them I think the original structure remained The frontage was certainly retained https://goo.gl/maps/bGQNS
Incidentally my Leodis research to find that image turned up, in comments on other photo,s that construction for "the Light" was underway in 1999 and it opened in 2002.

Re: Old Restaurants
Th3 frontage is still there JCD. Only the shops have changed. It is though in what is pretty much a bus only area so you would have to walk past on a future visit to Leeds.j.c.d. wrote:Picture makes me sad to think I won't see that anymore

Thanks for that I thought all the left side of Eastgate going up had gone.

Re: Old Restaurants
That understanding is correct however the photo MHoulden and I posted from Leodis is not Eastgate. Its looking northeasterly at the north side of the Headrow between Cookridge Street and Albion Street.j.c.d. wrote:Thanks for that I thought all the left side of Eastgate going up had gone.
Edit to add: The building with the two concrete floors on top of the brick (although it may give the impression of being behind) is on the far side of Albion Street and to the far right of the photo you can see beyond Dortmund Square what is now an entrance to Sainsbury's but used to be the South West entrance of Lewis's.
