Could the stone be one of those concrete blocks that are scattered around some of our parks.

Enter "speakers stone" lnto the google custom search box at the head of theses threads, and you will find info on several Leeds parks where these are or were to be found.

I think the former drinking fountain might be the answer, as this could be the original base after it was removed.If you examine the picture blown up,you will notice behind the shoes of the speaker on the top of the stone, what appear to be the remains of bolts for holding something on top of it.

I remember the drinking fountain still functioning in the late 1960s.

There is one of those big blocks of stone on Harehills Park too. http://goo.gl/maps/ZuT9FI've often wondered what is was. I'll look on the map and see if there was a drinking fountain nearby.
