I am not sure whether I ought to post a link to it here though .Phil, you know the site: should I post a link or is there a better way? Yes I've seen that post too, I think it best not to link it on S.L perhaps, different people read S.L than Derp sites      Then I shall mention that closer images are available but they are not legally obtained and it might be possible to see how these people explored dark arches if one was to google.     What confuses me is why the river still heads under that part of the station towards Bishopgate Street, the route it took along Kings mill goit, It only emerges in one place at the Bridgewater Place side, so why it still goes under that part of the station with the steps is puzzling?

Unless it doesn't? THEORYPerhaps the river "goes" under the new 'concrete' above ground bits where the steps go.Then meets a (c1905) retaining wall/blocked off 'Swinegate Goit' and is sent right to join the flow under dark arches. It could do with a visual of what lies 'straight ahead'. And whether some form of curved wall bend L>R sends the flow right.And/or a number count of "arches in", "arches out" (unless they converge?).View this sequence of photos on Leodis titled 'Swinegate Goit'http://tinyurl.com/747rjz4Guesswork here:-I think this may be the closing off of the 'straight ahead' river flowAnd these are some of the improvements in 'sending it right' under dark arches. There is talk of "cutting through Bondsman Weir for a sluice". The timing of this 1906 ties in with the laying of a sewer in a redundant goit / the outflow at warehouse hill.I wonder if there are some planning /civic documents that might clarify?[work in progess & will edit]

The arches plans posted on the "Network Rail Archive" thread might help.

Great set of photos Jogon, I'll study them later and see what we can work out. Here's how it looks underneath the station today, it's why I posted my question about why it goes under the station that far. It reminds me a little of one of those secret submarine bases.Action station! Action station!Aye, aye, sir, fire!        I can't elaborate on these photo's too much though.

There are some interesting colours in the second photo immediately above and what seem to be small stalactites in the first one (presumably deposition of calcium carbonate coming from concrete material).

The U Boat pens are worth a wander round - sorry won't happen again). If you have the Station plans that would be great. One close-up picture of the new wall says ".. 1st October 1905. View showing old footings of Ellis building at end of new wall..." Might help tie in with a plan?

This is the map, It's a PDF file and you can enlarge it to show lots of detail not evident on this small size map, even the arches are numbered. I can't upload the bigger map as it will spread this page to wide, you end up scrolling to City Square to read on.You should be able to see a much bigger map herehttp://www.flickr.com/photos/phill_dvsn/726905 ... stream/And if anyone knows how to display the full size PDF on Secret Leeds then please let me know and I'm mail it on to you to put on here. I think Tasa is a master of that?

That's a very interesting map Phill. It takes some working out but I think I've managed to do it. I would love to go on the underground flow of the River Aire there. It seems to me that there may be scope for some sort of tourist visit by a boat and that whoever owns that area (Network Rail?) may be missing a chance. I wonder what would happen if someone canoed down with someone else taking a video of the scenes? I wonder if anyone has ever swum through and lived to tell the tale? I wonder if the river has ever frozen and someone skated down?

Leo, PhillGood isn't it.I'm just gradually working out what's where. The (still visible) undergound bridge below this grill had part of the course of Kingsmill Goit http://goo.gl/maps/s9RYCardie sussed these all out pretty well on an Isle of Cynder thread http://www.secretleeds.com/forum/Messag ... Light=1See picWith some flow taken off right down the (noted) weir and flowing out down what is now Pitt Row Still haven't clarified the inflow points. Leo, I'd pay for that boat ride, the wild swimming sounds 'exciting'!
