Leeds by gaslight. Let's make a record of them all, before they go.

OK - here we go.

An excellent & simple suggestion from Exiled in Essex.

Who can post as many locations (& even better, pictures) of surviving, existing gaslamps, inside & out, in Leeds?

I know a sum total of ZERO answers to this, so it will be a good one for me.

I know there are going to be people out there who know all these already, so it's going to be...
ONE POINT for naming a location.
THREE POINTS for posting a new picture.

Apologies to those of you who don't have access to a digital camera, or find it difficult to get to these locations.

Happy Hunting!

The Secret Leeds Team.

Hey know its the wrong thing to do but did a bit of web research as i broke my leg playing rugby at weekend so couldn't go out and do some investigating. Found a few pictures on leeds civic trust website www.leedscivictrust.org.uk/bits.htm. I know 1 of which is behind the corn exchange which is the lamp on the corner of the building. the 1 which looks restored looks as if it is on park place in the city centre and the other, which is like half a lamp i don't have a clue about.

Post the pictures up, if you can find them again. We have permission to do this, but please credit it to www.leodis.net.

No points for this, I'm afraid, as we need confirmation that they are STILL THERE for the purpose of the competition.

OK, this one is probably worth half a point. There's a great collection of gas lamps in Queen Square, behind what used to be the Coburg Pub.

I've noticed recently that they're replacing the top of these with what I presume are replicas, as most of them had been nicked or dissapeared. The bases are all original I think.

There's also one in the alleyway behind Queen Square between Ventura and the new student residencies. Again, I think it's just the base, but I might be wrong. This one looks a bit sorry for itself. No pictures I'm afraid, so whoever can get a snap of these can have the points as well.

There are 25 remaining gas lamps in Leeds.

Park Square would be a good place to look and also the yards off Briggate and The Headrow.

Bah, I wish I wasn't 200-odd miles away, I'd go out looking!

Can I clarify - are we talking lamps that are still lit with gas? Or just the old lamp-posts & shades (?) now run with electricity?

Hope this isn't too much of a silly question!

There are still some working gas lights inside the Hyde Park Picture House.

Yep, this is what i want to know, if it is just the old ones then i can think of a couple in New Farnley and 1 in Churwell i think. (I'll have to get my camera out and go hunting!)

There are five on Queen Square. Here are photos of two of them.

Good pictures fluffysheep,

I was on Queens Square today. It's a beautiful Georgian type square just off of Woodhouse Lane behind the old Coburg Pub ( now Viva Cuba ) It's well worth a walk around. I reckon the others must be in the yards off of Briggate, or the afforementioned Park Square.
