Just a guess without a recent site viewing, but is it Hinsley Hall in Headingley Lane ??

This will be a hard one, not a view from a public place I think. In front of the house is a terrace and some steps. Look at the style of architecture and think where it might be, and what these houses came to be used for.Hope that doesn't give too much away.

Was it in the dim and distant past one of the first casinos in Leeds?

Looks like it could be one of the large villas off New Road Side, or maybe Cardigan Lane?? I'm a bit stumped to be honest, there are quite a lot of these types of residences around the Headingley / West Park / Far Headingley area. There are some quite fabulous old mansions just off Headingley Lane, all the roads leading off to the right as you go up the hill towards Headingley used to be where the wealthy citizens of Leeds lived. Sadly many of these buildings are now carved up into flats / bedsits which have been very unsympathetically converted. A friend of mine once rented such a flat in an old villa off North Hill Road and the old fireplaces and ceilings were fantastically ornate but the room partitions cut straight through the old rococo ceiling rose and many parts of the baroque style stucco plasterwork were crumbling and ruined. Imagine seeing Harewood House converted into bedsits and done very badly by cowboy builders on the cheap and you'll have an idea of what I mean.
