As I am rubbish at W&Ws I can safely know that I won't be giving the correct answer with Claypit (as in Claypit Lane). At least that can now be ruled out if others are trying to guess.

Hi The Parksider.I've cheated here as I have clicked on the Bear Pit link in Phill's and BarFly's posts and noticed that it "opened in 1840 for the Leeds Zoological and Botanical Gardens" so that sounds a very likely answer to me.
