[quotenick="iansmithofotley"]Hi Pashy,Some of the main 'legitimate' entertainment clubs in Leeds, around 1968, were the Windmill Club in North Street and the Ace of Clubs (formerly Astra Cinema) in Woodhouse Street. I mention 1968 as that is the date when new legislation came into being allowing gambling in premises and both of these clubs had casinos. Previous to this date there was lots of illegal gambling taking place, mainly involving card games. The previous legislation in 1963 created some 'grey areas' which were blatently flouted, hence the 1968 laws which controlled premises, the games played, stakes, winnings and the control of alcohol, etc. There were some other places which were purely gaming clubs such as Brandons club in New Briggate and the Continental Casino at Moortown Corner. The Windmill Club was in an old large detached mansion and was a 'cabaret club'. Along with the Ace of Clubs, this was one of the places where the local Leeds 'gangsters' and other members of the the criminal fraternity would frequent. I think that I first got to know of Eugene from the Windmill Club. Also at this time, Kenny Dobson (the 'flower man' from Briggate and St James's Hospital), who died a couple of years ago, used to be a bouncer/doorman. I have no idea what happened to Eugene since the 1970's and I do not know if he is still alive. I have no knowledge of him ever 'owning' any clubs but I suppose that it is possible. Ian. I remember Eugene. Nobody messed with him but that was just common sense. He was actually a nice fella if you knew him as were a lot of his friends

I was around there in the mid 60's. I met your Dad once in a pub called The Shaftesbury..not far from the centre but I can't remember where..long time ago. It was Feb. 1966..my 18th birthday. I was with John and Colin Walsh, Bobby McGrath and a few other folk. Your Dad was very gentlemanly and I think he may have bought me a drink..within 'the round' of course.I left Leeds about a year after that and went down to London which was my home for many years.

Interesting local blog about Charlie Smith ,Probationary bobby in Leeds in the late 60s earlier 70s by the looks of it. Must have croosed his path in my one of my old stomping grounds the Piccadilly bar. Always jammed packed on a Friday or Saturday night, next the King Charles, then onto the Peel. Good times had by all.Kind words also for our local favourite doorman Tony Hardcastle. Also some other interesting Leeds and surronding area comments.https://jerrychicken.wordpress.com/2011 ... lie/Cheers Y

I knew of him, I suppot Milford so didn' t really see him play. But I beleive he was well know around the traps as a" hardman".Some of my old Brudenell school mates played with him at the Queens.Seemed to remember he had a head made for radio. Yes,he certainly did ! I'm hoping to play masters rugby for either Milford or East Leeds this summer. How is Brisbane ? I was there in Nov 2008 for the rugby. Stayed in Vulture Street near the cricket ground. One helluva storm while we were there ! blew my washing half way up the street ! Jimmy Nugent died around 1990 from what seemed some sort of blood related disorder. I was at his funeral and so were the "hardmen of Burley" A lot of people were there at the funeral. I know this thread is old but I would be interested in news of Terry Mitchell. I have been told but not confirmed he was killed in a car accident. I do remember he went to "Princes Gym" and regularly would run to Otley and back for "exercise"

Imagine my face when I watched it a few years ago (having moved to Moortown around 7 years ago) and saw Louis driving Jimmy to a Thresher's.....the Thresher's that used to be on Moortown Corner. It gave me a funny feeling in my stomach to think Louis Theroux had been so close.
