A Mene Mene on a post by the Centenary Bridge, Leeds.

Post by Leodian »

This Mene Mene wording intrigues me. I spotted it on a post during a stroll on January 23 2018 on the Brewery Wharf side of the Centenary Bridge over the River Aire, Leeds. The wording is 'Go throw yourself into the sea' followed by Mene Mene 2005.

I wonder if anyone knows of any particular reason for this Mene Mene being there? It may or may not have a relevance or just be a coincidence that it is by one of the emergency throw lines that have fairly recently been installed by the River Aire in that general area.

I now admit my lack of knowledge in that I did not know what a Mene Mene is. On the off chance that anyone else does not know I found this definition:-' "The writing on the wall", or "the hand writing on the wall", or "the writing is on the wall" or "Mene Mene", is an idiom implying that there is evidence of an impending disaster. The event may be seen as difficult to avert.'

The first photo is a close-up of the Mene Mene and the second shows its location. If the Mene Mene has been there since 2005 then I have been extremely unobservant!

There are quite a few of these dotted around Leeds.
Pippahale.com has some pictures.
They originate from the New Testement.
I have seen one or two of these and they just did't mean/mene anything at all to me.

Thanks dogduke for that information :).

I've now found this related Secret Leeds thread http://www.secretleeds.com/viewtopic.php?t=1095 titled 'Origin of "Go throw yourself in the sea"?' that was posted on April 21 2008. It seems therefore that this Mene Mene may have been at its current location for at least 10 years! I really have been extremely unobservant to have never noticed it before :o.
