There seems to be some confusion. Wetherspoons have bought the Elinor Lupton building with the aim of opening it as one of their pubs, as stated in the YEP article.
A local group of complainers wanted yo use it as a community centre but don't appear to have had any money to buy it.
Given the Lupton name, I guess there is a familial link to the Duchess of Cambridge? Perhaps she'll be asked to perform the opening ceremony

No confusion over the new pub Ravey. The confusion lies in that the YEP is quoting Wetherspoons as saying they already have a pub in Headingley.

Ah, that makes sense then.
No, I have no idea where the existing Headingley outpost of Wetherspoons is either.... unless they mean the Three Hulats, which is in Chapel Allerton (and the nearest according to their website)?
It's probably an error on behalf of a PR company who've never been to Leeds, but have seen that the Cuthbert Brodrick and the Hedley Verity look close on Google....

I lived just close to that building, and then in the area, for 3/4 years and I never heard anything from any communtity group wanting to take it over.
Good on 'spoons as I'd much rather it be themselves take it over rather than the inevitable supermarket that looks to cash in.

Wetherspoons took over the Black Bull in Pudsey now The Crossed Shuttle it always has plenty of people in there.I have been in a couple of times and i cant fault it the meals i have had have been good value. The Bull was a dive now its a pleasure to go in, Wetherspoons do a good job on revamps i say good luck to them they are doing what i thought would never happen bringing pubs back to life but with a modern touch. The young ones in this age dont want the old tap room atmosphere so we must move with the times this is why so many of the old type pubs go to the wall.

According to the Headingley Green Party both City Varieties and the LadyBird Project (
http://www.theladybirdproject.co.uk/ ) were outbid by Wetherspoons.
The Greens are urging people to object to this application
http://planningapplications.leeds.gov.u ... Q1FJB17S00 for the Elinor Lupton Centre and (without explanation of why) this
http://planningapplications.leeds.gov.u ... NZ3JB17S00 to extend the Mary Morris residences on Shire Oak Road
