Sorry to all if i don't seem to answer very quickly but I am often pretty busy.Thank you very much for all your suggestions and I will start to work my way through them, hopefully at the weekend.Keep the suggestions coming though if you have any more. Shame I can't pay you all for your help but do I get paid for the extra work I have to do for this? This is Leeds City Council/Leeds Schools I work for so what do you think ; )

THEN THERE IS THE TALE OF THE LEEDS SOLDIER WHO WAS GIVEN A BEATING BY THE LEEDS POLICE (he fell sarge...ahem!) the locals, drinking in various pubs, joined other soldiers and went looking for coppers to beat up.anyway,in the end the old milgarth police station was under siege....the actual story is more elaborate than that, but i think it can be found in-'an illustrated history of leeds'.

The girl requested events specifically between 1910 & 1920.! The army vs police street battles you mentioned Wiggy, were nearer the 1810/1820 mark. JUNE 1844.The troops were men of the 70th.Regt. of Foot, stationed in barracks up Woodhouse St. They had attacked and seriously injured a local man [Edwd. Thompson ] in the Green Man beer house. When the two men were arrested by Constables J.Haig & B.Best, several of their comrades, using their heavy military belts, set about rescuing them from police custody. Which after heavy fighting, they managed to accomplish. But not for long. They were rearrested with several others of their ' rescuers', and lodged in prison overnight. After all being fined the next day, and put under 'confined to barracks' order. However, about 50 other troops slipped out that night. And at a prearranged time , they met at the Green Parrot public house [Harper St.]. And arming themselves with cudgels, sticks and other weapons, confronted the police in Briggate and Kirkgate. Where much damage was done to both property and the police. One such chap, PC Wildblood, being very nearly killed. A military picquet evetually quelled the riot , and escorted the troops back to their barracks. The following day however, saw a huge mob of locals gather to confront the police.[They had previously been encouraging the army in their fracas.] After a pitched battle, cleared only by a police charge with cutlasses, and subsequent arrest of a further 17 persons, were the 'military' riots brought to an end.Sorry for all this Carrotol. Just trying to put history into its category.

Why aye Bonny lass, Jan!Ya can look at me as long as you want, Luv! Yum!I see you doin' it every time you post a msg(OOPS-is that Txt speak?- sri!XX) If I put my avatar on mypostings,we'd be shut down(!), so you'll have to imagineJoel mcCrae or 'Gaz' Cooper instead! Now't like them lads,o'course, but they're far better looking than the 'Arry'original ! Now then, lass I gather you are not a 'txt speak'advocate?I'm afraid it's so easy to slip into that mode under Peer pressure,(Kids, grandkids etc!) so I'll DMB not to incl it in my rpls to U!Actually, that method of communication was used a lot when I was a telegraphist in the stoneage RAF! (saved a lot of dots and dashes in our messages!)There is a recognised list of Acronyms for use in IT ,some positively unprintable! Unfortunately, these words and phrases are in common email use now, so don't appear so shocking as they would have in 'Miss Pedantic's' class!( by the way I'm sure she has set up a chiropody clinic in Kirkgate!)(Sorry, that should read 'Pedicure').Has this gone on too long? Sorry folks, son Scandy, married intoa long line of Scandinavian Trolls so it rubs orft! Skoll,Trolls! They are lovely people Reeely!ArryXX
