OK folks thanks for your updates - I am going to move the site to a new, rock solid, much faster, UK-based server in the next week or so, which should resolve the problem (I hope).

Wow!Super-speedy today - page loading time gone from 15 seconds to around 1. Well done, Duncan and thanks.

Nowt to do with me I'm afraid, I haven't touched the site - though I'm pleased to hear it's working better anyway! I did start setting up the fancy new high-end server last night though, so these problems should hopefully become a thing of the past quite soon.Cheers all x
