Probably cos of my Grandmothers ancestory, (Metcalfs and Askrig ) I've got Metcalf(e) ancestors too - maybe we're distant cousins! Are you a Metcalfe Society member? No, never bothered with it. Are you one of the Askrig Metcalf(e)'s?

No, never bothered with it. Are you one of the Askrig Metcalf(e)'s? Mine are mainly from Bellerby, but not too far away. They were all over that bit of Yorkshire!

My Grandma always kept on about this big ole house near Askrigg, called Nappa hall. When she died we found an old bible with the names and dates of the Metcalf(e)s going back a few hundred years or so. Along with a stash of photos of her and her mother, grandparents etc all outside the place.Apparently in the 30's 40's some americans came over to try to take the house back to the US, but my grandma and her mum, showed all the documentation to the national trust, or similar organisation to stop it. Needless to say, it stopped the rape of a fine building. However, in recent years it has fallen into a bit of a state, the main hall and needs a lot of work to put it right. One day, I'll win the biggie, buy it and make it my family seat once more Me, lord of all I purvey..

Sorry Simon, you're too late - it's recently been sold:http://www.yorkshirepost.co.uk/features ... 16.jpThere was an article about the sale in the last Metcalfe Society newsletter too - apparently the new owner is a nice bloke who seems likely to treat the place well, and at least it didn't go to any dodgy Americans - your grandma would be pleased about that!Oops, maybe we should start another thread for this - it's not really very Irish!

Cheers Lily. I don't get a newsppaper, don't bother with them since I can't read.Aye, ChrisM, thats the place. Must say when I visited it a year or so ago, it didn't look as good as it does there. The woman who greeted me said many people come and say they hail from it. Her face was a belter when I showed her my documentation and proved I was descended of the place. She said I was the only one so far to have been able to provide evidence of having a direct link to the place. One day Lily, I' will wn the biggie and we'll have a big party to celebrate..
