SecretLeeds - History, culture and architecture in Leeds

Hello kind folk.

I am researching my ancestors, and know that my family owned a brickworks/ brickyard in New Wortley. I have reason to believe that this is the brickyard where the Armley Hippo was found. The area adjoined the railway, and was sold for the construction of the gasworks. They owned properties and land on and around Longley Street/ Railway Road, Niell Street, Bushire Street, Armley Road, and Winford Street. In total they owned and then sold about 30,000 square yards of land.

I'm looking for an old map of the area, and any local knowledge about this area between 1830 and 1876. I've explored Leodis, and posted in here about 10 years ago.

Can't help with the knowledge part, its a bit before my time

For the streets you seek, the best source is "The Godfrey Edition" Maps of the area. There are two available for New Wortley and its environs, both numbered 218.05. One is for 1888, the other for 1906. They are reasonably priced (around £4 each) and available from Waterstones, or by post from Godfrey Edition (small postage charge, very quick service). My current home in shown on the 1906 map, and I have known the area since the 1950s.

The help from you guys has been amazing! The side-by-side map is brilliant, and the other maps show a level of detail that allow me to get a really good mental picture of the area. My "Longley Builders" were in New Wortley, and another firm of Longley Builders who were in Hillidge Road in Hunslet. I can now see the relationship of the roads.
