SecretLeeds - History, culture and architecture in Leeds

First of all my I say hello to everybody here at Secret Leeds, as this is my first post here.I have recently had a lot of old family photos and some letters come in to my possession. One of the documents was written by my Great, Great Uncle William Henry White in 1938.I only have 2 pages and have no idea how long the document was originally. I have attached the first page to this post and will attach the second page to a subsequent post I don't know how to attach them both to one post)I was wondering if anyone may have any information or old maps of some of the places mentioned in the letter, such as Chetwynd Terrace and Paradise Terrace etc.Although I have lived in Beeston all my life (57 Years) I don't remember either of these places and would be very interested in any info.

Hi Tinny and welcome to SL. I'm sure you will get better help than from me but.....As a long time Beestonian you will know that Beeston Road has never come close to overlooking a railway line in Beeston. It becomes/became Town Street at the junction of Old Lane which then inturn becomes Millshaw after Crows Nest Lane where the GNER line passes. Would that be the same line that ran by the Rex cinema at the pottom of Middleton Ring road. ?.    

JCD, the line that ran past the Rex joined up with the GNER line I was referring to just up the hill from the former Woodman Pub and the more recent White Rose Centre. The GNER line still exists forming what Metro refer to as the Wakefield line and of course the Leeds spur of the East Coast mainline. The line to which you refer came up from tha canal/riverside at Stourton crossing the Wakefield Road just above First Direct previously Waddingtons where the bridge support/sides can still be seen but the craossing is long removed. Thanks for the link Tykebhoy, I can see that the Chetwynds and the Paradise's are next to each other just before Meadow Lane. My Father used to work near there at Plaice's bakery in the 60's.Its funny that you should mention Millshaw and Town Street because i now live in the Beeston Park's.I used to live at Westmount Place near Malvern Road until they were pulled down in the early seventies as part of the slum clearance program. We then moved to the Linden's until I got married and had a couple of houses in the Noster's until we moved here. My Dad owned Walkdens Bakery on Beeston Hill from the late 70's till the early 90's and i worked there with him till he retired.Great website btw!
