Commission Agents are people who place a bet on someone elses behalf, taking a commission for doing so.

Thanks Uncle Mick and Spackler. I take it on course betting was legal pre 1963 so a turf commission agent would collect bets in the shop and then go to the race meeting and place the bets with a legal bookmaker there. To be 100% legal they would have to "lay off" 100% of the bets (less their commission) as oppose to bookies who only lay off where they think they are overexposed?Could this also be an advent of no win no fee. I.e. some agents offfered to only deduct commission from winnings?

Although this Leodis photo was taken in 1967, members of my family say that this bookie's office was in operation prior to 1960, which is when they moved away. http://www.leodis.net/display.aspx?reso ... SPLAY=FULL
