I'm sure there are lots of other memories within the SL community too.Leeds, like everywhere else, gave so very much. Too true jdbythesea - My Dad was seriously injured on The Somme, but struggled to survive and managed another forty three years of useful life, considerably inconvenienced and with disabilities and resulting illness which he rarely even mentioned while working past normal retirement age. The soldiers mentioned on the Leeds Pals website are in alphabetical order of surname, and therefore my Dad is the last. Even though we are used to seeing early film and documentaries its still shocking to see what the Lads actually went through. A visit to the Somme cemeteries is a humbling experience, and its grand to know that the Authorities in Europe do such a marvellous job of keeping the many memorials in such respectful and pristine order.
There's nothing like keeping the past alive - it makes us relieved to reflect that any bad times have gone, and happy to relive all the joyful and fascinating experiences of our own and other folks' earlier days.

Sorry, Leodian - my fault! You'll need to key in all the characters manually to get to the link. Including .aspx at the end http://www.yorkshire-guide.co.uk/nidder ... orial.aspx

Thanks so much for that Si - can you believe that in all the hundreds of times I've looked at Dad's picture (studio photo in newly promoted Sergeant's uniform) I've never realised the significance of the cap badge as being specially for "The Pals."Having taken a magnifying glass to the photo I can see that its definitely that one - if only I had the badge now - I've loads of his things, but not the badge.
