I have been trying to find out my late Grandfather's army record from his service in ww1. I have managed to trace his name on the Absent votors list and found that he served with the Northumberland Fusileers. However the name on this list may not be him as my late Mother told me he was a cook in the army,but I don't think they had a Catering corps in ww1. The Absent voter list does not tell me where he lived either . I was also told that he had an Army pension of £1-1shilling a week which was I think quite a substantial sum in those days, Any one know how to go about finding his service record?

You can request a copy of someone's service record - the last time someone of my acquaintance did this there was a fee of £25. They received a good copy of the chap's RAF record. http://www.veterans-uk.info/service_rec ... cords.html

The absent voters list should tell you where he lived.Have you looked at the central library Local/family history section volumes,compiled by a local volunteer?There are a number of volumes but basically you look up the index of names,take the reference number next to the name and then look up the details in the actual volumes.The library staff can help,but the guy who didf it comes in just about everyday and goes around asking if you are looking for relatives from WW1,nice fella,though i dont know his name.I got both my grandfathers addresses,army and navy numbers.The National Archive online has WW1 military records,though army ones are incomplete as many of them were damaged during the blitz.They are known as the Burnt RecordsThe National Archives directs you to Ancestry.co.uk,so you may need someone who subscribes to search for you.World war one medal records may also help,but it only gives number and what part of the army they were inhttp://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentson ... 439Another worthwhile source is the National Roll of the Great War,which i have on CD rom,which i can check.I cant guarantee if he will be on as it wasa costly affair to have a mention in it,about a few shillings i think.

Thanks cosni for this information.I think I will have to take a day and go down to the Central Library and have a look at the records you mention but if you can check and it wont cost you have a look for Fred Lazenby.He is on the Absent voters but I dont know if it's him.He did live at a dwelling in Barkers buildings in Burmantofts.Thanks again.

You can try the Commonwealth War Graves Commissionwww.cwgc.org if he comes up it should give you his age, rank and service number ect, it is a free service.
