How about some ancient history, my dad used to tell me he was passing the Woodpecker in 1926 during the general strike and as a tram was heard going past the clientele swarmed onto the street and began stoning it, he recalled it was absolute mayhem.

Point of interest about the 67/68 buses, in the early 50s they used to run from the fairway down Foundry Approach, Compton Rd. Stoney Rock Lane and to the bus station.

Ok - a bit of work on Leodis has produced a few pics and an interesting tale......
there are 10 types of people in the world. Those that understand ternary, those that don't and those that think this a joke about the binary system.

First up a fabulous picture of a horse-drawn tram outside the original Woodpecker.

This is the original Woodpecker in 1935. note that it belonged to Ind Coope - relatively unusual for Leeds. The pub's Address was No. 1 York Road. Also note the tailoring shop next door - Adleman's

A shot from 1938 - by 1939 the pub and all thebuildings further up York Road would have been demolished.I've included this even though its a poor shot of the pub as you can just see St. Joseph's R.C. church at the left hand side - so you can fix exactly where the original pub was from that.

A 1935 shot of the buildings on the opposite side of York Road (nos 2 and 4) as it turns into Marsh Lane ('Mather's shop is on marsh Lane)-.you will see from the Tetley's sign that no4 was a pub - the 'Simpsons Arms'

3 years later these buildings are being demolished - and the 'new' Woodpecker would occupy this site( actually a few Yards further back to allow for road widening). So it was built, partly on or very close to the site of an earlier pub - not the original 'Woodpecker' but the' Simpson's Arms' (DOH!!!)

Frustratingly difficult to find a good shotof the Woodpecker - it turned a corner and so had 3 'sections' if that makes sense - here it is on an aerial pic of 1963 just above Quarry Hill flats at the bottom of the pic.

This shot shows the left hand facing 'wing' of the pub in the 1950's. Note the advert for 'Double Diamond' - presumably the pub still belonged to Ind Coope. Also note that 'Adleman's' also crossed York Road!
