Black lion bramley

Post by billy the buffalo »

Does any one know when the black lion at bramley was built . That is the building that exists now . I think it was built sometime after the Second World War and was possibly built by dufton builders of bramley. If anyone has any information or pictures it would be good, we have established on maps that it was still the old lion in 1934 maps. There are a couple of photos on leodis that just have a glimpse of the new building.

The present incarnation of the Black Lion opened for business in the 21st July 1939, the first licensee being Harry Skelton.

Thanks for those details. We are attempting to unearth further information relating to the original Black Lion - and hopefully a couple of photos.

Current online sources show the original pub to be located at the bottom end of the long since demolished Smith’s Row (leading to Daisy Hill) – now part of the rerouted Bell Lane.

On the OS map of 1934, Smith’s Row & pub are still intact, whereas the OS map of 1954/5 appears to show the pub & lower (Broad Lane end) part of the row had now been demolished.

The Black Lion was operating in 1861, with a John Heaton listed as inn-keeper. Any information as to when the original pub was built, closed and demolished, together with any links to photos, would be appreciated. Otherwise, it’s a trip to the library.

Sadly, I cannot find a photo of the Original Black Lion but I can add some more details.
The premises first appears in the Trade Directories with the White's 1870 Directory when the licensee was William Schofield.
As you say, the premises was in operation before this but the Trade Directories are a bit hit and miss [for Leeds, anyway] until Kelly's kicks off in 1881 [although the Black Lion isn't recorded in that particular volume].
There is, though, the City of Leeds Corporation Licensing Register. There was no legal requirement upon the corporation to keep such a register until 1872 [although they did].
The earliest surviving register covers the period from 1856 through until 1861 and the Black Lion [License No 354] records John Heaton as the licensee in 1857. The 1861 census also records him living at the premises with his wife, son and four daughters. I cannot say how long he had been the Licensee prior to 1857 as the date of the commencement of his tenure is not recorded in the Licensing Register [with the 1872 register style of format, dates were recorded].
He certainly wasn't there in 1851 - the next verifiable date as, at that time, he was still employed as a Wool Comber living in Sutton-in-Craven, Keighley. It would be interesting to know how he made the jump from Keighley to Leeds and being a Publican.
The premises were, though, in operation in 1851, Joseph Smith being the Innkeeper [this from the 1851 census].
I don't know how long prior to this it was a pub but the 1841 census, such as it is, could be worth a trawl.
Also, there is the nine year gap between the 1861 census and the 1870 White's Directory where the licensee is unknown.
So from 1870 through until the premises is rebuilt in 1939, the Licensees were as follows [I've included the Trade Directory entries as well as the Licensing Register entries as the Directories were not always correct etc];
White's Directory 1870 William Schofield
Porter’s Directory 1872 William Schofield
Licensing Register 1876 John Clark
Licensing Register 1878 Edwin Marshall - Comes from the Acorn Inn, Leeds & Bradford Road, Bramley.
Kelly’s Directory 1881 Not listed
Licensing Register 1881 John William Uttley - Convicted on 7th September 1882 of having been drunk in his Licensed Premises and Fined 10 shillings including costs.
Licensing Register 1883 William Henry Gaunt
Kelly’s Directory 1886 William Henry Gaunt
Kelly’s Directory 1888 William Henry Gaunt
Licensing Register 1890 Joseph Banner Briggs
Slater’s Directory 1892 Joseph B Briggs
Kelly’s Directory 1893 Joseph Banner Briggs
Goes to the Bridge Inn, Bridge Road, Kirkstall.
Licensing Register 1895 William Henry Gaunt
Kelly’s Directory 1897 William H Gaunt
Licensing Register 1897 Albert Hunt - Until 1895 was Licensee of the Cardigan Arms, Lower Town Street, Bramley.
Subsequently goes to the Globe, Broad Lane, Bramley.
Licensing Register 1897 Charles Wood
Robinson’s Directory 1898 Charles Wood
Kelly’s Directory 1899 Charles Wood
Kelly’s Directory 1900 Charles Wood
Kelly’s Directory 1901 Charles Wood
Robinson’s Directory 1902 Charles Wood
Kelly’s Directory 1903 Charles Wood - Goes to the Crown, Town Street, Stanningley.
Licensing Register 1902 Samuel Musgrave - The Licensing Register records that the transfer of License from Wood to Musgrave took place on 24th January 1902. The 1903 Trade Directory is incorrect.
Kelly’s Directory 1904 Samuel Musgrave
Kelly’s Directory 1905 Samuel Musgrave

Robinsons Directory 1907 Samuel Musgrave

Kelly’s Directory 1932 Albert Whitham
Kelly’s Directory 1936 Albert Whitham
Kelly’s Directory 1938 Albert Whitham - Goes to the Rock Inn, Leeds & Bradford Road.

With regard to the redevelopment of the pub, the following entries are made on the Licensing Register;
10th January 1938 “A Provisional Order (on plans) for the removal of this license was granted to premises to be erected on land situated on Broad Lane, Bramley on the side of Smiths Row and opposite to the existing premises”.
10th March 1938 “The above order was confirmed”.
21st July 1939 “Declared final”.
The premises page is cancelled with a final note “License removed to Black Lion, Broad Lane (Re-building) 21st July 1939”.
