West End House, Kirkstall

Post by dsco »

Just stumbled across a good little history/info page on the West End House website, which I thought I'd reproduce here for your interest. Can't find any other threads solely about this pub so feel free to add any more info, thoughts, memories, etc! I'm wondering if the Tordoff family mentioned here are any relation to Jack Charles Tordoff of JCT600.

Original page can be found here: http://www.westendleeds.co.uk/history/

HISTORY

The first mention of The West End can be found in the West Riding Trade Directory dated 1867, where it’s listed as a Beer House. The first licensee, Mr William Tordoff, did not purchase a wine license until 1875. Prior to 1972 The West End’s closest neighbours were the Harding family, living in what is now the Abbey House Museum. Then work started on some stone terraces around The West End, and they were named Tordoff Place and Tordoff Terrace after the pub’s landlord. Other members of the Tordoff family were also licensees in the area.

Ben Tordoff The Yorkshire Hussar, Stanningley
Wilfred Tordoff The Cardigan Arms, Bramley
Walter Tordoff The Malt Shovel, Armley

Although originally known as The West End House, between 1898 and 1922 the name was changed to West End Inn. During this period Masonic lodges and societies used it as their headquarters.

1899-1916 The National Independent Order of Oddfellows
1906-1922 The Druids Lodge
1921-1922 The Steam Engine Workers Society

Kirkstall Brewery, now converted to student accommodation, supplied beer to The West End from 1867-1936. Then Duttons brewery from Lancashire bought Kirkstall Brewery along with two other local breweries, Albion Brewery and Willow Brewery. They in turn were bought by Whitbread in the early 1960s, who then sold to the present owners in 2001. Memorabilia from Kirkstall Brewery can be found around The West End.

This is probably as far removed from public house landlords as you can get but-
Rev Bill Tordoff was the vicar at Seacroft Congregational Church from 1954,
and his relatives lived off Kirkstall Road.

What prefix are you referring to tyke bhoy? :?

Edit. I've had a private message from tyke bhoy and his comment was just a fun jest that I am happy about and which made me :).

Hi All
West End House Has just been refurbished and reopened for business
on 7th November (I think). If it's as good as it was before refurb it should be a winner!

They always had about seven real ale wickets (Changing regularly).and the food we always found
to be first class. They have a Christmas/New Year Menu each year and are open for parties
celebrations etc. Haven't been for a month or two but the landlord and his partner are still
in command so the quality won't have deteriorated!

Well worth a visit or two!

Visit the website www.westendleeds.co.uk for further info.

I can add a bit more info from William Tordoff up until Elsie May Peel / Armstrong. It shows all the listings of the various licensees and the various Trade Directories which they appear [its a bit long winded, sorry].

Porter’s Directory 1872 William Tordoff Born 24th March 1822 Wibsey, Yorks. Son of Rebecca and Joseph Tordoff.
He marries to Ann Myers [b.1823 Kirkstall] on 21st June 1846 at St Stephen’s Church, Kirkstall. Both Joseph and Ann have signed the marriage register with an “X” so it seems that they were illiterate.
The 1851 census records him living at “Kirkstall Forge” with his wife, Ann, and their children Joseph [b.1849 Kirkstall] and Sarah [b.1850 Kirkstall]. His occupation is recorded as Forgeman – Hammerman.
The 1861 census records him living at an address described as Tordoff Terrace, Kirkstall, along with his wife and two eldest children. Also listed are two younger children born since the last census William G [b.1855 Kirkstall] and Wilfred [b.1857 Kirkstall]. William’s widowed father, Joseph [b.1792 Little Newbeck, Yorks], a retired forge hammerman, is also living with the family.
Sometime between 1865 / 66 William applied to the magistraites for a Beer House License [3 Guineas]. It is unclear if he saw this business opportunity because there were so few drinking houses in the immediate vicinity, because he had received preferential prices from the brewery, or because of a change in his employment status as a result of him being charged with Larceny from the Person [theft]. He was aquitted of the charge on 10th April 1865.
His address in the 1871 census is now recorded as West End House and his is occupation is now noted as Inn Keeper.
His family now includes another son, Ben [b.1861 Kirkstall].
The Beer House Licensing Register records “Convicted on 10th September 1872 of selling intoxicating liquor, “to wit, porter, after the hour of eleven at night” and fined £3 and costs under section 24 of the Licensing Act 1872. The conviction to be endorsed on his License”.
McCorquodale’s 1876 W Tordoff
Kelly’s Directory 1881 William Tordoff
The 1881 census records him living at 3 Church Street, Headingly, with his wife and [now married] eldest daughter, Rebecca, and her husband George Dutton. It seems that he has returned to his original occupation of Forge Hammerman. Why ceased to be resident at the West End House is unknown although he continued as the titular licnesee until his death.
Died on 12th May 1883 leaving £365 11s 6d to his widow, Ann. Ann’s address is recorded as 4 Tordoff Terrace, Kirkstall.
Licensing Register 1882 William George Tordoff The Licensing Register records that the transfer of License from William to William George took place on 25th May 1883. The 1882 Trade Directory is incorrect. This date would have been the date of the next Licensing Transfer Session of the Licensing Justices. Prior to this, William George would have had to apply for a Protection Order to enable the premises to operate as a Licensed Premises without a licensee. The error in dates of the Trade Dist rectory arrises from the fact that they were compiled in advance [some more in advance than others].
Second son and third child of William and Ann Tordoff [see above]. Born 1855 Leeds baptised on 28th of January at St Stephen’s Church.
The 1861 census records him as a schoolboy, living Tordoff Terrace, Kirkstall with his parents and siblings.
The 1871 census shows him employed as a Cloth Gapper, living with his parents at the now named West End House.
He marries to Elizabeth Ann Dove [b.1857 Pocklington, Yorks] on XXXXX
The 1881 census records him living at the premises with his wife. His occupation is noted as Beer Seller.
Kelly’s Directory 1882 William George Tordoff
Kelly’s Directory 1886 William George Tordoff
Kelly’s Directory 1888 William George Tordoff
The 1891 census records him living at the premises with his wife.
Slater’s Directory 1892 William George Tordoff
Kelly’s Directory 1893 William George Tordoff
Died in the third quarter of 1896. He died intestate so does not have an entry in the National Probate Calander.
Kelly’s Directory 1897 William George Tordoff
The Licensing Register records that the transfer of License from Tordoff to Jackson took place on 7th August 1896. The 1897 Trade Directory is incorrect.
Licensing Register 1896 Thomas Jackson
Comes from the Brookfield Hotel, Brookfield Street, Hunslet, where he had been the licensee from 10th April 1894 until 1st My 1896. Prior to that, he had been the licensee of the Goodman Hotel, Goodman Street from 24th March 1893 until 10th August 1894.
Born 1845 Holbeck, Leeds. Oldest child [of six] of George Jackson [b.1816 Leeds] and Mary Ann Jackson nee Dawson [b.1817 Leeds].
The 1891 census records him living at 1 Lansdown Mount, Holbeck, with his wife Eliza nee Jackson [b.1846 Holbeck] [whom he had married on 6th March 1865 at Leeds Parish Church] and their daughters Sarah Ann [b.1868 Leeds], Emily Jane [b.1869 Leeds], Emily Jane [b.1870 Leeds], Mary Alice [b.1873 Leeds] and Kate Eliza [b.1875 Leeds]. His occupation is recorded as Pattern Maker [Engineering / Foundary].
Robinson’s Directory 1898 Thomas Jackson
Kelly’s Directory 1899 Thomas Jackson
Goes to the Three Legs Inn, Lower Headrow, where he will be the licensee from 10th August 1900 until his death on 30th July 1902 [although he was still the titular Licensee until the transfer of the license to his son-in-law – the husband of his eldest daughter, on 7th November 1902].
Licensing Register 1900 John Whitaker Roundell Born 1865 Bradford. Oldest son of Charles Roundell [b.1843 Leeds] and Emma nee Cawood [b.1840 Bradford].
The 1891 census records him living at 21 Wigan Street, Bradford, with his wife Annie Martha nee Hutchinson [b.1868 Greasborough, Yorks] [whom he had married on 12th May 1888 at Bradford Parish Church] and their daughter, Emma [b.1890 d.1893Bradford]. His occupation is recorded as Shop Keeper [Confectioner].
Kelly’s Directory 1900 John Whitaker Roundell
Kelly’s Directory 1901 John Whitaker Roundell
The 1901 census records him living at the premises with his wife, their son, Harry [b.1895 Bradford] and a domestic servant.
Robinson’s Directory 1902 John W Roundell
Kelly’s Directory 1903 John Whitaker Roundell
Goes to the Wren’s Hotel, Cross Belgrave Street. Where he is Licensee from 18th September 1903 until 18th September 1904. From 26th January 1906 until 19th March 1911 he is the Licensee of the Woodman Inn, Commercial Road.
Licensing Register 1903 James Dobson. Born 1858 Leeds. The fifth child [of nine] of James Dobson [b.1824 Leeds] and his first wife, Sarah nee Webster [b.1826 Leeds]. The 1871 census records him living at the Clarence Hotel, Steel Street, Hunslet, where his father is the licensee. [James Snr. had previously been Licensee of the following premises; Clarence Hotel, Steel Street, from the inception of the Beer House Licensing Register in 1872 until 1st July 1875. Star Inn, Bush Street 20th September 1880 to 13th January 1882. Craven Heifer, Fleet Street from 6th November 1885 to 30th October 1891. Aire & Calder Tavern, Call Lane from 30th October 1891 to 5th May 1893. He died in 1897].
The 1881 census records him as a visitor to the Bull Hotel, Scarborough. His occupation is recorded as Maltster. It is probable that he was working for his father who, at the time, was licensee of the Star Inn, Bush Street, a “self brewing” beer house, later to be taken over by Timothy Taylor’s of Keighley.

The License transfers to his wife, Elsie May on 19th October 1951. I do not know why the license transferred, and I’m wondering if, as this was after her father’s death [his last address was noted as being the West End House] it was something to do with the business – although, Walter was only the lessee, as was John Henry and John Walter before him, none of them were the freeholders or, as the next licensee is Elsie Armstrong, if Elsie May and Walter had divorced and she had reverted to her maiden name.
Licensing Register 1951 Elsie May Peel
Publican’s License granted on 9th March 1961. It was confirmed on 14th April 1961 “Subject to the surrender of the Beer & Wine (on) License”.
