Diverting from Rodley but not so far up the road to what used to be "The Eleventh Earl"... previously known as "The Stanhope Arms" - heres something I found on www.leodis.net...Stanhope Arms, situated on Fink Hill, corner of Willow Green. Built as a dwelling house after 1750 for John Hardy, land agent for the Spencer-Stanhope estate. In 1842 it is being refered to as a public house. In 1970, the name was changed to the Eleventh Earl to avoid confusion with the Stanhope Hotel in Calverley Lane. In this view, the Salvation Army and scouts are parading with their bands. The photo is from 1922.

If you're quoting from leodis RG then I would have to dispute that info.I played a lot of darts in the 70's, the Stanhope(Fink Hill)was one of the 'top'pubs and it was just that-a pub! I would suggest itwas closer to 1980 when it became the 11th Earl.

Hello, never noticed this thread before!. I have an old 1980s book on rodley (Rodley in Times Past - M. Pearson and M. Holt) with some facts in (i'll assume they are true)1, There was a man who lived in Rodley called "Fish Jim" and he used to carry buckets of fish on his head2, There was a lady on wood street with a mangle and for coppers she would do your weekly washes3, Apparently an old lady called "the knocker upper" used to come round if you requested with a large inverted umbrella type object and knock on your bedroom windows4, Until after ww2 resisdents could only get water from a pump located in the square5, During the 20's and 30's there was an annual carnival though rodley, complete with carnival queen6, Harrisons shop on town street was demolished in 1946 by a stolen run away army lorryHope you enjoyed these, I will assume they are all gathered from fact lol

in the late fifties the railway pub was well known for serving after time at that time the pub consisted of about four small rooms.also the barge (three horse shoes) being in leeds had to close at 10.30 whilst the owl at the other side of the road was in pudsey and could serve till 11.oo. about this time the stanhope always had two caravans in the car park the myth? was that these were used by ladies of ill repute.
