Hunslet Nelson would have been around Stafford Street close to where McDonald's now is. That's about as flat as it gets.

If this works https://goo.gl/maps/afq2ULWSipj is a 2008 Street View image with the Wellington on the right looking towards Leeds. The Shell station is roughly where McDonalds now is and where I'm theorizing the approximate location of the Trafalgar Club was. I still can't see the possibility of a steep car park anywhere along here unless it was on the left and Leek Street drastically altered the terrain.

Hunslet Neson played where it says "Cricket & Football Ground" on the map. The chapel on Low Road is still standing to enable you to get your bearings

Thanks Uncle Mick I think it just about confirms I had my bearings until I moved McDonalds nearly half a mile towards Rothwell ;)

Just spoke to a pal of mine in Leeds who confirms that the club was on two levels and also it was the Trafalgar (ex. Nelson C.C.) it was partly rebuilt by the new owners but was two floors before. he remembered also that there was a large space between the club and the pitch which could have been a golf driving range or just someone practising he also recalled that there was a gymnasium for the cricket club members on the lower floor.

Forgot that Hunslet Road becomes Low Road about that area.

The Beech on Tong Road Opening!

Post by gars21 »

Walked past on Sunday and despite no sign of life for several years, a banner has appeared above the door saying. "0penimg 27/11/15 free glass of bubbly for all" or something to that effect. I hope that they have some nice ales and look after the place and don't let the riff raff in like before! Anyone have any idea who has taken it on and the plans they have?

Many Happy memories of drinking in the Beech when Stan Dodds (ex. Leeds Rugby) was the Landlord and in later years when The Irish man John McCormak took over. two excellent Licensees and a great crowd of lads, yes a few likely lads but a well run good Ale House.
It will never be the same again whoever takes it on, sadly those days have gone for ever.

I think the imminent demise of the Prince of Wales on Mill Hill will be mentioned on this thread given its regular periods of closure. Well it has sort of met that demise having been renamed "Bar Tap"(?). It was heaving when I passed it on Friday evening but novelty and mad Friday will certainly have been contributory to that. I suspect this may be a last throw of the dice even if CNOSNI has branded it the real ale quarter with the long established Scabby taps just round the corner, the rebrands of Black Knight and Head of Steam also in close vicinity, the year old Griffin up Mill Hill and also Friends of Ham, the Brewery Tap and Tapped close by too

Arry Awk first mentioned it on 10th May 2008, "Disturbing news from Taverner (Simon Jenkins) in today's YEP. The Prince of Wales on Mill Hill is set to close so soon after getting Leeds Brewery Products (Bitter, Golden etc.) installed. Some trouble with the new owners I think he said. Hope not!"
Drapsey then noted that on 8th Devember 2008 it was open again.

I'm sure I mentioned it on this thread or another that it has had very irregular opening for sometime. It had a lick of paint externally about a couple of years ago but very little indication of improvement inside. I think the irregular opening didn't help it. The cask beer would need to be kept flowing to remain in reasonable condition and if it wasn't then the poor quality of the cask beer plus punters finding it closed when expecting it to be open wouldn't encourage return visits..
