A subject close to my heart & liver this one. I'm back in Leeds after six years in Hampshire & now living a stones throw away from the Palace pub on Kirkgate.
The Duck & Drake has had a makeover recently, but the Old Royal Oak is the same as ever. I used to get very drunk in there & occasionally still do. The Regent & General Elliot are exactly as I left them.
As an 'honorary Yorkshireman' I always found Big Lil's a bit dodgy, but that's because it was, wasn't it ?
The three at my end of the Headrow have had their moments too, Hoagy's, Vine and Three Legs. They're still subtly different from the ones at the posher end, like the Horse & Trumpet.

Two places that no longer exist but had the advantage of coming equipped with a 'night club' attached were Stoggies and the Hayfields. Stoggies downstairs was quite a circus at times, but it was cheap & the women were...erm...well, female I suppose.

Now I think I'll read the entries on this thread & get all misty eyed about the Market Tavern, the Duchess of York, the Mucky Duck and all the boozers that have disappeared over the years.

Welcome dogdice. After reading this thread if you have about a month to spare you might like to read the lost pubs thread
http://www.secretleeds.com/forum/messages.aspx?ThreadID=300

As has been pointed out before its funny that this is the oldest and most viewed thread. Does it say something about the posters or the city?

Hey Franco

Finally got round to replying - are you psyching yourself up for your four pubs of the Apocalypse tour? Hope you enjoy. Remember some loose change and nerves of steel just in case you are offered a half eaten pork pie from a Macbeth-like wrench in one of them!!!!

Hello Sears
Yes the four Leeds pubs of the Apocalypse tour is now on. I've spent the last month hand picking an elite squad of gin soaked dilepidated human wreckage all suicidal enough to escort me into these temples of terminal desolation.
I feel rather like one of those early Edwardian gentlemen explorers peering into the glowering unknown. Goodbye my friends, you might not be hearing from me for a while. God save the King!
