Someone comments on James W Bell's flickr that their 'ansestors' the Molineauxs had the pub.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/jamesw-bell/2343630217/ Yes, a "grannemary" says her great great grandfather was Henry Morton, the licencee from c.1878, and a "kerrierules" says their ancestors were the Molineaux family. This Flickr thread (which mis-identifies the Crown and Fleece as Fred's) is following a similar path to the Skulls thread, albeit several years back!

The Old Royal Oak will never reopen; it is currently being converted to a shop with flats above. I have updated the Old Royal Oak entry on page 1.I have also updated the entry for the Fox and Grapes as the derelict ruins that survived have now been demolished.

Passing by The Palace on Kirkgate on November 14 2018 I noticed it had scaffolding round it and was closed. Expecting to find that it had closed down and would probably be replaced by apartments I was pleasantly surprised on asking to find that it is just undergoing renovation work and would reopen soon.

In 1957 after finishing National Service and looking round for a job my Pal George suggested i work with him in Kirkgate Market. As we were a Wholesale Co. when it wasit was time for breakfast about 9AM. We would take our eggs, bacon, mushrooms, bread etc.over to the Royal Oak and upstairs a Lady from the Market ( Big Nan ) would cook all this up for us. Don't recall a great deal about the room just that it seemed musty and unused.
As far as i know it was always known as a Paddy's Pub ( Nickname Diddley Dee ) as it was a John Smiths Pub i only went in once with a pal of mine John Rafferty. Thought it was a strange designed / laid out place.

A friend of mine who until recently rented a flat behind the Palace was saying that they get lots of trade from people who come up from out of Town to take up the "Special offers" that the Hotels put on when Reps.and Professional people are not working.He also said they liked the prices of the Beer Spirits etc. so there are quite a few Stag/ Hen nights.
