It has been variously described as a ‘white elephant’ and the ‘playground of Leeds’ – most likely people today would consider Roundhay Park, which has just marked its 140th year, as the latterhttp://www.yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk/news/lat ... -1-5000351
Is this the end of the story ...or the beginning of a legend?

The list goes on - best park in the world - well that's my opinion anyway.

I considered it so back in my day Ravey, and it was only an opinion :-)

I wonder if the YEP picked up their feature from this SL thread of mine on October 4 2012.    http://www.secretleeds.com/forum/Messag ... eadID=4392 OK, probably not as the YEP feature would likely have been penned some days back.

For all the many and obvious attractions of Roundhay Park, like a lot of things in Leeds, it is often spoiled for me by the clientèle you find there especially during the summer months. For me the best Leeds park is Golden Acre Park, by quite a margin. It has all the important pluses of Roundhay Park, albeit in a more compact site, and without most of the downsides.

I sometimes forget that things change and that it is over thirty years since I left Leeds. During that time I have never been back to Roundhay Park and, consequently, I perhaps have a rose tinted view of a place where I spent so much time in my youth, thus my over the top statement of, "best park in the world". Time does change things but nevertheless it is a place that holds many happy memories for me. I did forget to mention the nine hole municipal golf course as well. :-)

I would not like you to think it is a dump because it is not.I should think there are not many citys with a park like it and i trust it will stay the same for many years to come.I would not say yours is an over statement because at that time it was the best park in the world in your mind nothing wrong with that.I can say the same about my Hunslet the best place in the world to grow up in if i had my time again thats were it would start you keep thinking it was the best park in the world my friend. All the best.
No matter were i end my days im an Hunslet lad with Hunslet ways.

Parks, like most things in life, appeal to different people in different ways. Roundhay Park at daybreak on a crisp winters morning is a very different place to what it can be on a busy Sunday afternoon at the height of summer.
