During that time I have never been back to Roundhay Park and, consequently, I perhaps have a rose tinted view of a place where I spent so much time in my youth, thus my over the top statement of, "best park in the world". Time does change things but nevertheless it is a place that holds many happy memories for me. I did forget to mention the nine hole municipal golf course as well. :-) Hi Johnny 39 I think you will find Roundhay Park is still has nice as you remember it. I would not like you to think it is a dump because it is not.I should think there are not many citys with a park like it and i trust it will stay the same for many years to come.I would not say yours is an over statement because at that time it was the best park in the world in your mind nothing wrong with that.I can say the same about my Hunslet the best place in the world to grow up in if i had my time again thats were it would start you keep thinking it was the best park in the world my friend. All the best.     Thanks Tilly I'm glad the park is still a pleasurable place to go, I know some parks have changed beyond recognition. My Dad was a Hunslet lad. He used to tell me about swimming in the cut and the adventures they got up to. I did work at Denison's on Moor Road for a short while. As you say Ravey we all have our favourite places for wide and varied reasons. Funny enough when living in Alwoodley, Golden Acre was nearer than Roundhay Park but apart from the odd visit to the lido it was a place we never used, now Meanwood woods we put to very good use. :-)
Daft I call it - What's for tea Ma?

Roundhay Park (Tilly, Johnny) just seems to get better.I'm wrong side o' town now and have Golden Acre / Meanwood Valley Trail on doorstep. But if we have mates with kids from south, it's a good day's entertainment.I got to know RP by jogging+ moutain biking v. early morning when I lived that side. Some good improvements were made for the Int Cyclocross 1992 (20 years ago!), namely the waterfall path to the castle. There is also the relatively new Monet Garden with it's canal-lock garden (featured here on what & where once).    http://www.roundhaypark.org.uk/roundhay ... index.html

I think that's the only photo of the little railway in Roundhay Park I've seen. It's a shame it got vandalised. The Lakeside Railway in Roundhay Park first opened in 1989 and was a Dumb-Bell loop shaped layout. There was only one engine which is pictured above.    The park was good when the railway and little fair was there, I don't reckon there is much for the kids these days though.

There is the skate park and new playground at the top of Soldiers Field, by the old (not actually a tram terminus) car park. Very good, so I'm told.

The Nicholsons who owned Roundhay Park were clearly very wealthy.High on the Moors above Thruscross there is a shooting lodge/ hut called 'Rocking Hall' on Rocking Moor so named because of the Rocking Stone.I thought all the land belonged to Devonshire Estates / Bolton Abbey. But apparently the 1822 Land Census describes Rocking Hall as "a shooting box of Mr Nicholson". I'm assuming it is him/them. Anyone know how to find out?

I have fantastic memories of Roundhay Park ... the Lido (freezing), Childrens Day, Sports Day, Highland Games, Sledging, the Fairground, the Maze, working at the Mansion, going to the Phoenix ... biased because I was a local ... the only place that comes close was Woodhouse Feast.
