This cast iron pipe is at the base of the embankment taking Whitehall Road across the head of Cockersdale. It's in two parts, bolted (riveted?) together, and the stone wall appears to have been built around it. The course of stones immediately above the pipe overhangs it. I thought it might have something to do with drainage, but there are no remains of fittings (or a hole) above it. Another section with the same dimensions would not fit, as the wall overhangs the top of it.

I would take a look at the old maps if I were you Si, just see if there was a lean to old building on the other side of the wall at one time, they used any kind of existing wall to build on and save materials and money if they could, especially if it was an old storage shed or something.I don't know the area, so have no idea if any small industrial buildings existed, I'd have a look on the maps myself but I'm not sure exactly where to look.

Found it, the 1938 map has 'tanks' marked above that pipe Si. It only appears on the 1938 map, and it doesn't say anything more about them, or what they did.

Hi Phill. The wall must be about 50 foot thick, as it's the retaining wall of a road embankment (see Cockersdale thread.) Seems odd how the pipe is set into the wall, as if it was built around it. Especially odd considering the size of the embankment!

Thanks Phill. Can you post the map? Yes I can Si, small scale only, and blown up bad quality though sadly! ARGH, my finger is killing me!! Nothing to do with Cockersdale of course, but I think it's rather funny non the less

Hi Si, I've not been following the other Cockersdale thread, so apologies if this has been mentioned lots already, but I just noticed the remains of these old steps in that retaining wall toohttp://goo.gl/maps/SFi3l
