Wortley Rec has one beside the swings - must be a real pain for the guys cutting the grass. Seems to be made out of millstone gritI've known this since childhood and can't believe I never thought about it's use before - case of the common place becoming invisible. SL you've opened my eyes - again.

I'm not sure they are barrage balloon moorings. On Googling, most appear to be concrete with iron hoops set in them, sometimes with a pair of ramps/stops for the winch lorry, as here.As for "speakers" stones, I think they would have been grander affairs in a Victorian park than the stones pictured by Weenie. They look quite old, and have been carved for some specific purpose, IMO, although this might not be their original position.

I go with Si - Barrage balloon moorings, the Armley ones protecting Kirkstall Power Station and Kirskstall Forge perhaps?

As the Barrage Balloons get most of the vote, come to think of it, during the 80's i remember seeing many of these Balloons in sky but more of the Blimp style. that reminds me something else to add to the things we dont see anymore ? Weenie
