This is from a very fragile paper copy of the 1953 1:25 000 map - the area of the park still exists.

Hickling MIck.Yes, I would have been in the park then, although quite young, I was born in 1954 in Steel Street which is where West Yorkshire Foundries is now, think we moved to the Smeatons in about 1955, it was in this park when I was only a toddler that my sister June Bickerdike took me up the steps of the slide and somehow I fell backwards down them cutting the front of my head wide open, the scar and dent is still there to this day lol. Which shop are you referring to?? The only shop that we used to use most of the time was Barratts sweet shop, think it was near the Clarence Pub. My parents used to go to the New Inn at the top of Clarence Road and would also come home with jugs of beer. My mother used to play the piano at the 'pocket hole' pub on South Accom Road, think it's real name was the Albert, it was only called the pocket hole because it was so small. My brother is 6 years older than me so he may have a better memory with names, he's called Allan Bickerdike. Thanks for all the interesting messages and maps.

Hi Mick,I used to go to Barratts at least once a day spend time deliberating what to buy from the 'penny tray' and that's what it was, a tray with sweets which Mr's Barratt would put on the counter or bring it round so I could see it, all we could really get were penny Arrow Bars, flying saucers, fruits salads and black jacks. My father used to call there every Friday evening to collect all the comics for the weekend and the sweets, this is where my brother got his weekly issue of The Eagle comic, he still has some too. I vaguely remember the post office at the top of Clarence Road and Hunslet road with the Vauxhall garage next door to it. Do you remember when Donald Campbells 'Bluebird' was there on display?? I remember it clearly, my father took me to have a look around it.What I'll do is mention your name to my brother Allan and see if it rings any bells with him, if so I'll get back to you.
