Sightings of Black Dog / Barghuest / Padfoot

Post by jonleeds »

A fairly common bit of folklore that seems to be widespread across the British Isles is that of a large spectral hound, usually black with a shaggy coat, enormous feet and with eyes as big as saucers. To encounter this beast is usually a bad omen portending a death for the poor witness or that a member of their family could soon pass away. There seem to be quite a few accounts of this mythical canine from around the Leeds area, although they seem to occur many years in the past. Perhaps its just an old suspicion and old wives tale but has anyone else had any more contemporary sightings of this hell hound around our city?

Is this the end of the story ...or the beginning of a legend?

The Barghest and the Padfoot are both mentioned in a book I’m reading about Henry Harrison the Leeds wizard. I was surprised to read about the Barguest being sighted in Headingley as my understanding was that it was a Yorkshire Dales entity, specifically living in Trollers Gill near Appletreewick.
