RAC Rally - 1996

Post by raveydavey »

I was reminded today, the the "Wales Rally GB" - the final WRC Event of the year - is currently being held in North Wales.

This is the sad remnant of the one mighty RAC Rally, which became (amongst other things) the Network Q RAC Rally which was the name it was held under when it came to Leeds in 1996.

Following the last stage of the previous day at Croft, the cars travelled to overnight garaging and repair facilities at WASS on Hunslet Road (Network Q is Vauxhall's approved used car brand). The next day actually started from the Royal Armouries before a Special Stage in the grounds of Temple Newsam,

Back in 70's, 80's and 90's, the race was still a media highlight and got good coverage on mainstream TV with live coverage of some stages and highlights of other. Clumber Park seemed to feature a lot. It was a rally that took in a good portion of the country too, so there were stages within reach of a lot more people. Now it wanders around a few forests in North Wales and barely seems to rate a mention outside rallying circles.

Brief details here (you'd think the internet hadn't been invented in 1996....) http://www.at-speed.co.uk/rcssin10.htm
