Yes, I'll probably take a walk down there myself - from recent recollection of seeing it from the opposite bank, it does look quite weathered but I never considered it to be an original stone for some reason.

Thats interesting, I have never seen the Canal Arm (off the Canal Basin)on any other map that I can think of. Shows quite clearly the Canal Basin and locks to get to the River.
Is this the end of the story ...or the beginning of a legend?

Having taken another look at these facinating drawings I have a couple of questions for those more in the know than me.Firstly Phill_dvsn wrote: Here's the outfall looking back towards Leeds bridge as it was in 1860. Here's the direction you'd be looking in if there was an aerial image available. http://g.co/maps/zsgj7Interesting to note the original stone Leeds bridge since replaced with cast after the photo was taken.    It appears that all three buildings on the far side of the bridge on the right still survive today looking at Google street viewhttp://g.co/maps/4u8bq

The tram line you mean I take it you've seen on this map BigN?It appears to look like track with point work, but it isn't marked as anything on the map.

Excellent stuff.I assume that it is all still there but outflow 'under water'?I am not techy enough to overlay images but hopefully will add here attachment 'leeds c.1500 dams'.Viewed left to right this shows5- High Dam (rumoured to be still there under water by,near or under the start of the Dark Arches)this allowed the goit to run off higher left to right past Castelhyll (Bank/Griffin/bishopgate st)4-Further along is Bondman Dam running off this (is that all still under there?3- Manorial Cornmill. from which there seem to be a split of a further two channels.

Ha ha. I've just realised you can drive under the arches on Google Street view If anyone is interested there is an old railway sign on this gate here that must be a 100 years or more old.http://g.co/maps/wx7vwI think Tasa knows about this one too If I recall correctly it was about fire under the arches, no doubt it would have been fiitted after the dark arch fire of 1892.

You know you could be on to something here BigN.I've just found this photo showing an arch in exactly the right place it should be if a tram line ran the way the map shows it too.I'll see if I can find some more photos and upload that map. EDIT.. But after looking at the below photo it only shows one arch. The only place a tram line could have run through the arch here is where the bridge now stands.It's unusual to have that odd arch in the structure though.

And the mystery map. I have to admit I can't work this one out If it is any kind of tracks they seem to start and end rather abruptly.

Yes, I have a photo of it at home - I'll try and find it and upload it this evening. I can't remember exactly what it says but it does mention the Joint Railway so that will help date it.
