Following our recent visit to photograph the Dark arch of Parlington hall a few weeks ago.. i had heard the story of the old cellars to this once grand place been re-discovered some 40 years after the hall was flattened by the demolition men. The man to contact and in the know was Brian Hull who kindly agreed to show us around the estate and tell us the story of the rise and fall of Parlington hall.

The Hall was abandoned following the death of Colonel F.C. Trench Gascoigne in June 1905. His only son and heir Colonel F.R.T. Trench Gascoigne, already living at the nearby Lotherton Hall had no desire to take up residence at the former family home as Lotherton had passed to him after the death of his aunt Elizabeth Gascoigne in 1893 and afforded superior accommodation to the older Parlington Hall.

Parlington hall slowly fell into disrepair and was demolished in the 1960's leaving no trace the hall ever existed. That was until some 40 years later when the new land owner Brian Hull was out walking when his foot went down a hole in the lawn, On closer inspection the hole looked quite deep so Brian had a little dig to see what was down there. The more he dug it became obvious there was something fairly substantial. After much hard labour Brian dug out the whole cellar by hand to bring a part of Parlington hall back to life. Brian new nothing about Parlington's history when he first moved there but this find has fired up his quest to piece together as much fact and history about the place as he can.

Leading down into the cellar.. It's a bit of a tight squeeze but nothing we can't handle! Brickwork stands next to stone suggesting different years of construction or alteration.

The cellar steps uncovered after many years. The entrance to the cellar had been covered well before the demolition men arrived so they wouldn't have been aware of the cellars existence.

Thanks to Brian's hard work we are able to go back in time and stand in the long lost cellar of Parlington hall. The cellar was situated underneath the drawing room and measures 24X12'At one time there were stone shelves supported by stub walls down here.

A ray of daylight shines once again over the cellar floor.

Not content with finding the cellar Brian has continued to dig and has recently uncovered the foundations for the curved drawing room. Such is the scale of Brians excavations they are clearly visible on Google earth.
