Rare opportunity - air raid shelter York Road

Post by SKE »

I always knew there was an old air raid shelter under the field opposite the site of the old Shaftesbury on York Road, but never saw it except for an old pic on Leodis. Anyway, a few months ago I noticed a hole in the ground, very close to the bottom of the footbridge. The hole has perhaps an 8" diameter and is set in concrete. I suspected it was part of an old ventilation shaft and lowered by phone down to see if I could get a picture. As you can see, the picture is not great (I had to greatly alter the brightness etc to show any detail) and although I planned to try again with my camera, not got around to it yet. The hole Is still there but I am sure it is only a matter of time before it is filled in as it is a health hazard.

I am sure someone could (carefully) lower their phone or camera down like I did and get some decent shots.

Ah - apologies for the duplication, if any moderator could delete the extra threads I would appreciate it.

Now that is a really useful use for a selfie stick - probably the only one
