There are two concrete bridges, one over the Aire and Calder and one over the River Aire. It is an old rail line for taking coal to Skelton Grange power station. I have been over them many times when I used to walk the dog down there, there is now a bridge under the new M1 which you are able to go through.

Picked it up on old-maps, which is a deteriorating site.
On the mini map on your attachment a dead end track is shown which I think is the course of the old waggonway - just one of a maze of lines over the years.
But it doesn't half make a walk fun and purposeful if one makes it a historical expedition.
When the mud dies down I'll be there!! I may have a camera by then...I may have worked out how to use it....I may have worked out how to post the pics......

Re: Knowsthorpe Lane
There used to be a railway line over to Skelton Grange power station. It supplied coal from Rothwell Colliery , just across the canal and river. It was built in the 1960s and you can see the route on this map: https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/435124 ... /10/101320. (Zoom out if you don't have a subscription: it's still clear enough to see) There's some photos of how it is now at https://geolocation.ws/v/E/2714533/form ... -grange/en. I've been trying to track down when the line was removed but the closest I can get is some time in the mid-late 80s.

Thanks for that Brunel . I had to copy and paste the url into a web address finder so I hope you do not mind that I have put a direct link to that map here:- http://maps.nls.uk/view/100947104Brunel wrote:http://maps.nls.uk/view/100947104

Looking at old maps like that is always fascinating. I wonder how the intriguingly named 'Pickpocket Lane' got its name? The map also has at least 2 'Mineral Railway' marked which may be of interest in view of the Iron Works thread (I've noticed some 'Mineral Railway' marked on nearby areas old maps).
