It was nowhere near the severe "flat" end it is now. However, it was pretty steep and most likely very unstable, with all the Stone slabs just ready to slide dow nthe very severe slope!! Being a young kid, about 12 / 13, fear is unknown.. Such a shame such a structure is left to rot! Should be made, as someone has mentioned, in to a raised walkway and linked to, somehow, the rest of the city! Would probably cos the earth to do summat like that ~I would imagine!!

stevief wrote: Great piece of film phill, your production is starting to get more polished.Question,on the opposite side of the viaduct from Whitehall Rd.there appears to be the remains of another, lower, railway bridge that once spanned the canal. If so,how can there besuch a difference in height so near the station? Or was Central Station on two levels? Hi Stevie. Yes there is the lower bridge still intact, That whole area was railway related nearly up to the Yorkshire post building in places. It was the low level goods yard which also connected with the Round house near the Armley Gyratory. The reason there was so many differnt lines around Leeds is because of all the differnent competing railway companies. If they needed a goods yard they had to build there own. Often right next to there main competitors where land was available! I'll try find some pics & maps of the area!

Have a look at the attached. Its a bit blurred, but you can see the old HL station on there and where the bridge split off. this has to be one of the best places in Leeds I feel. Its such a great rooftop garden. What surprises me is the girth of some of the trees up there to say it is stone. The tower in question is just out of view to the left branch after the viaduct, but you can make out the canopied roof of the station entrance.

Nice post Ls1. It shows the layout pretty well here. It's a pity we can't see bigger size pics on here. The whole area was more or less given over to the railways in that area. One thing i've noticed about disused railways is that most of the trees springing up in the most inhabitable places growing on bridges & ballasted track bed is the Beech tree. apparently they have a very shallow spreading root system that lets them flourish. They spread like mad & grow tall quick. I've seen whole rail yards dissapear in 5 years when they get going. Alan titchmarsh get your compost bag. your fired :-)

Hi PhilThe things I believe are ball cams are by the wall on the construction site side, right at the bottom end, nearest the old holbeck stations. There seem to be at least two about 40 feet appart. Bright white new shinney things. Now going back to the Clayton tunnel, what was the major accident that happened then? I'm intreagued!!I have been doing quite a bit of wandering round that area recently, discovered an very old slate / stone quarry, found out there used to be a big old brewery at the back of the old westwood hospital grounds - found the only remaining evidence which is a large stone arched gateway with a lion on top. When your down near the station next time, go onto water lane and ave a mooch round the old tower works. A cracking bit in there is the old power house, with paster moulds on the walls of a lot of the old engineers of the region. You can have a look at my pics from there on: Flickr Well you could if I could get the dam link to work!!!!Any help on that would be gratefully recieved.
