Detail from the 1908 Godfrey Map - seems to be 2 conical quarrys with tunnels leading from them. It's interesting that mention is made of whether locals are aware of tunnels passing under their houses - I recall my brother (in Wigan) asking an estate agent why an house he was looking at had such a big garden - it transpired that it had a capped mine shaft in it! - my brother only found this out when he examined an old OS map! In fact I would suggest anyone who buys a house to examine old OS maps of the area.

Most interesting. Thanks for adding that old map Hippo.I'm guessing those tunnels are still under there to be honest. The new factory seems to be built where the old fireclay works was. There was a Capstan winch/hoist around the large crater area looking at your map.

One on left seems to be near Windmill Rise off Blue Hill Lane- one on the letter seems to refer to the one in the open ground - curiously there is a round pond to the left of the warehouses on Google sat viewhttp://tiny.cc/hvjbq

Yes, very interesting area to look at.There's still sizeable remains of what looks like a brick retaining wall of the old Fireclay here. Questions about it's structural integrity arise due to it being fenced off in the car park area. And the embankement has recently been landscaped where the new factory has been built. One of those tunnels ran directly under there.Images hosted from flickr.com herehttp://www.flickr.com/photos/phill_dvsn/

An interesting named access road into the new factory here. Names like this are usually a good indication of what went on in days gone by. It would be interesting to find out who 'Trapper Tom' was, or what job he did. I'm going to have a look on Leodis. My investigation mate Brandy, Where are you lol? Hi Phill_dvsnI'll curious whey they needed these quarrys at all since there was an industrial tram that carried clay from the Busk pit on Wortley Rec. Unless these pre-dated the tram line. And where was the windmill on windmill hill in the Godfrey map?Interestingly another thread showing another "Windmill hill" in Pudseyhttp://www.secretleeds.com/forum/Messages.aspx ... ght=1Shows a similar pit with tunnel - can't understand why they went to the trouble of making a tunnel and didn't carry the material over ground

I'm sure more will come to light regarding the purpose of the capstan, and tunnel at some point Hippo. The Trapper Tom way street name doesn't appear on the latest Google Earth, or street view. It is marked off on the older Bing maps aerial images. I'm just wondering if features on an old A-Z. I have one somewhere. I must dig it out.Good call getting in touch with the Y.E.P letters section on your part

The 1916 kellys shows Denton Row as leading off where Trapper Tom Way is. The 1908 map shows a row of houses on the road , just off wortley moor road called Denton Row, although the road itself is not named..

Windmill Hill would almost certainly have had a windmill on it, for obvious reasons! However, the "pit" and tunnel shown on the Pudsey map have no similarities. The tunnel is Greenside railway tunnel, and the "pit" is in fact the spoil-heap resulting from construction of the tunnel's air shaft.I was hoping Grumpytramp might have some answers, as he seems an expert on this kind of thread. Maybe he's on his jollies?PS Googling Trapper Tom comes up with a north American pest controller!
