When the merrion centre was built the architects put in a number of access subways - all of which seem to have been abandoned and closed off. Here are a few pics of the subways to the north-west side - that ended at the back of Morrisons(originally Tesco) near the former Pig and Whistle. This shows the open area where 3 tunnels meet - seen from Woodhouse lane

there are 10 types of people in the world. Those that understand ternary, those that don't and those that think this a joke about the binary system.

From Woodhouse lane again . The Advert for the Radio Times says 'get every T.V.channel with the radio times' - and sure enough the pic of the mag shows 4 (count'em - 4!) channels listed.

About 10 Years ago when I worked for LCC graffiti removal Dept we had to clean those subways and they were open then. Smell of urine was so strong it made your eyes water I remember spilling something called graphi ghost which is an ultra strong bleach down my jeans and they practically fell of my legs LOL.

haha festwerfer i was just thinking it would be cool to use those subways again... but then you reminded me how my nana used to make us brave crossing the road rather than take the subway route due to the stale smell of urine!

We had to do the ones at the Windmill roundabout at Seacroft about the same time and it was a battle of wills with the local kids we would finish one section finish for the day come back and have to start again next morning. I for one am glad subways are being shut off these days they have always attracted the low life's of this world.

Hi all,I used to pass through these tunnels every morning on the way to work, and it's true to say it stank. There was always a tramp or two trying to get some money off you, and occasionally the odd busker. There are still some pretty dark and smelly tunnels under the roundabout at the bottom of Tunstall Road, Hunslet.Just in case anyone is obsessed about visiting these places.
