Fears for suspected burglar missing in Leeds sewers!Officers are very concerned for the man’s welfare after consulting specialists about the dangerous conditions in the part of the sewer network that the man is known to have entered.http://www.yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk/n ... -1-5626791

A bit more on the B.B.C now."Where the toxic gases are the footprints have ended, there was no sign of the footprints doubling back, and he was "99% certain" the man was still in the sewer. At that point the search has been cancelled and it's been deemed too unsafe to continue using humans, even with breathing apparatus.""The experts tell me that once inside that system there's no other way out and I don't think, particularly as we have evidence that he's entered the toxic section, that he's ever come out of there." http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-leeds-22343962

There was a report that confused me on the BBC local television news this morning about the incident. The item showed what seemed clearly to be the open part of Meanwood Beck around or near Sheepscar Street/North Street area, but it was referred to as a sewer. I thought the beck was not used as a foul sewer even where it is covered over as it runs to come out into the River Aire near the Royal Armouries.

Hi Leo, this top video is really quite informative, it goes into some detail what happenedhttp://www.itv.com/news/calendar/story/2013-04 ... n-sewer/It seems the burglars stood on the bridge railings herehttp://goo.gl/maps/lpXDcAnd used the security bars on the window like a ladder to climb onto the flat roof. The Police think they were trying to break into the wholesale jewellers which you can see herehttp://goo.gl/maps/G4mpbYou can bet there will be plenty of anti climb measures fitted around there now. As for the sewer itself the burglar went up, it's directly under the Hope street bridge herehttp://goo.gl/maps/kpIyIThe sewer overflow flap is on the left of the photo directly under the bridge and looks like thisThat's a sewer overflow flap, of which there are several down the Meanwood beck culvert, and inside the tunnels. It's a heavy contraption weighing 8 stone, it's designed to stay shut, and not let Meanwood beck water into the sewer system should the levels in the beck rise. It's also designed to only open and discharge sewerage into the beck during times of extreme heavy rain.If the main sewer system starts to become full to capacity from the street drains, the water can travel down these side overflows to the iron door, only when the side passages are full to the top will the flap open and release sewage into the beck. It's designed in a way that it will hold water, enough to take pressure off the main sewer, and not enter the beck until it has no where else to go. Should the levels in the main sewer fall, then the excess water in the overflow will then fall back into the main sewer.I doubt it ever works that way really, as the main sewers fill up, then so does the beck that will stop the overflow flap opening.

Leodian wrote: Cheers for that excellent information Phill. As it's clearly lasting I guess the sewer 'lid' is too well fixed for metal thieves to remove! Don't count on it, when both the sewers and overflows are full to bursting, even this happens http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7wC2yK5DFkE
