This time in LS17.Not many becks if any that originate North of the river actually flow North. This one flows North East for part of its journey. I am trying to trace the actual source, but I suspect it may be underground. It first makes an appearance flowing out of a culvert on the North side of Brookhill Cresc.I have traced most of it and put the details on a Google Map.http://snipurl.com/u8cieand: http://snipurl.com/u8cln

Er yes that was a quick post to see if the problem posting had been cleared.I found your find fascinating and have gone back to the 1854 OS map which appears to have Ellers beck rising in Eccup becoming Eccup beck and winding through Wigton knowle across Alwoodley Moss to drop down to where the Ring Road is to become great heads beck.So at all times the water should flow south or south east.I say should but the Eccup beck feeds into the resevoir now which was dammed at the Alwoodley end and fed across the aqueducts to Headingley south west.So what happened to the back betwen the east end of the resevoir to it appearing at the junction of shadwell lane and the ring road - not so sure at the moment but intrigued. Can you confirm where the water is flowing in what direction??

The water flows from the Lintons, eventually ending up near Eccup Reservoir.I don't think it actually flows into the reservoir but is channelled away to eventually join other streams that flow to the R.Wharfe.....??But I am intrigued by where it originates and why it suddenly appears from a culvert.Might have to ask Yorkshire Water.

Here's something you might want to look into after you've solved this puzzle Brunel, It's around your way too, it's something that's puzzled me for a bit as well. It's this smaller pipe on the righthttp://www.flickr.com/photos/phill_dvsn/428549 ... etleedsI'd love to know where it comes from. It feeds into Glehow beck near the bridge (the bigger pipe) along the path that runs through Gledhow woods from Lincombe drive onto Gledhow Valley road, The path is roughly at the bottom of Lincombe rise to get your bearings, whatever it is, there is a lot of water that seeps out of the ground in that grassy area along Lincombe drive, It causes no end of problem in icy weather.

Google street view of that water flowing out of the bank herehttp://snipurl.com/u8jybIt's constant, I wonder if it's an underground spring, or it's connected to that small pipe that runs near by on my pic? It also comes out here further along the street.http://snipurl.com/u8jyt

@ Phill.DAn educated guess that these are random springs, just draining the steep hillside.

I have looked harder on the maps and it seems Eccup beck runs as you say north, and it seems to run all the way to the lake at harewood. So "alwoodley moss" seems to be a collection ground/watershed for streams originating and going north to harewood via eccup beck and south to roundhay via great heads. Part of harrogate Road at alwoodley is known as "Hill top" so I assume north of that water flows down to the wharfe and south down to the aire.

It also comes out here further along the street.http://snipurl.com/u8jyt     All streams have to start somewhere and they often start from water in the ground emerging as a "spring". Many old OS maps show springs (and wells) and occasionally I try to see if any are there still and often they are not.At Asket Hill school we had two playing fields cut into the hillside. One was the school football pitch the other was just a grassy playground for summer only because a spring cast it's water all over the ground to make it a bog beyond dry summers. It was part of "The Rein" which ended in a small stream feeding wyke beck. When I went to the school grounds last year after it had been knocked down I looked for that spring and it was not there.I suspect that when estates are set out water is engineered such that land drains are set out that feed into road drainage and probably springs are culverted or set into a soakaway to land drains or whatever.maybe the piccy's you shoot are a result of the original water engineering of a spring into drainage silting up and the natural spring re-emerging???
