It's good to finally find out what that culvert was, i did use to wonder. Who'd have thought a mill pond in that area of concrete and horrid industrial buildings? Thanks for posting that map Chameleon

Looking on your magic map, Is there any other water course that feeds into the Gipton beck going back towards Roundhay road/Gledhow at any point Chameleon? That Gipton beck culvert section is largely unknown territory, It's a very stoopy, humid and boring concrete construction underneath Roseville road, I know it's like that for a quarter of a mile perhaps, but i have seen one picture further up where older Victorian brickwork provides a nice crossroads section, old and new construction meets nicely.

I can't for the life of me place this section of culvert been built in 1934, it's a concrete section with a trough in. There isn't one like that in the Gipton culvert these days. I'm just wondering if this junction is what fed the Gipton beck into the Meanwood beck, running alongside Benson street, and then came out of Brunels pipe on his pic?The trough in this pic is certainly the same design as the Outfall on Brunels shot.http://www.leodis.net/display.aspx?reso ... SPLAY=FULL            Another shot taken from street level.http://www.leodis.net/display.aspx?reso ... SPLAY=FULL    EDIT. I think that wall and house on this bottom picture is the old Benson street before it got flattened.Anyone else agree?

Here's the old Benson street in 1959, it looks the same as the houses on the picture above with the culvert construction. You can see the Gipton beck running out from the other side of the road, roughly where it emerges today.http://www.leodis.net/display.aspx?reso ... SPLAY=FULL        It was all still standing, but derelict in 1976.http://www.leodis.net/display.aspx?reso ... 0467165And i guess these industrial buildings with chimney, are the one and only Mills that used the mill pond on Chameleons map.Note the aptly named 'Breakwater hotel' in the foreground.http://www.leodis.net/display.aspx?reso ... Brunel wrote:          Meanwood meets Gipton/Gledhow                http://snipurl.com/ubv6wAs previously mentioned by Phill.D So it still follows the original line to meet Lady/Meanwood Beck, beggingg the question of the purpose of Brunel's bricked-up culvert. It does follow a line which would have been the bypass/overflow past the old pond but it seems rather newer than that.

Yes..... It seems Brunels Culvert was built in 1934(can't be bad having a culvert named after you mate) The mill pond was certainly defunct by that time, most probably not even there. I don't think the culvert was in anyway connected to a mill pond by that time. The Gipton beck lower down past that intersection pic on Leodis, was not built to carry any great amount of water. You can see how shallow the whole affair is to this day herehttp://www.flickr.com/photos/phill_dvsn/450727939/The bridge in the distance is Bristol street just before the New Roscoe.I guess Brunels culvert was merely an overspill to divert any heavy rain fall away from that inadequate section of Gipton beck. That's the only plausable explanation i can think of.By diverting that water into the Meanwood beck under Benson street and out of Brunels outfall (no puns pls) it would still travel around and meet the Gipton beck at the open section just below the New Roscoe herehttp://www.flickr.com/photos/phill_dvsn/450694954/You can see the Meanwood beck is much more capable of handling heavy flows than the Gipton beck at this point.

I've tried searching the net to find the pic again, I'll find it eventually, It was Messers Drain rat and Oggy that ventured that far up many moons ago lol
