I'm sure this is nothing to do with a brewery - its a pub sign for the Golden Cock.( I remember sitting in the yard at the back with a lemonade whilst my dad had a pint!) The resemblance to the Courage logo is coincidence.

I've posted a photo of the building on the 'Lost Pubs' thread (page 4)

Yep, that is indeed the roof of the Golden cock or the precinct depending on your age, its just further along kirkgate from the darbaar The present use of this building is Superdrug. Aye, Precinct was the one I remember. Apparantly, my dad sais the pub, originally the Golden Cock was owned by Courage brewery!

I have put some info about this on the Leeds lost pubs thread - and I will put some more on.Sorry, but I think your dad's memory is mistaken simonm. The superdrug building has faintly discernable signs that say Ind, Coope (and) Allsopp's. these 2 breweries merged in 1934 - dating the signs to post that date. Ind Coope & Allsops became part of the Tetley-walker empire which in turn became Allied Breweries (now Carlsberg Tetley) so the pub would have been become part of Tetley's estate - and I remember that the Precinct was indeed a Tetley pubseehttp://www.quaffale.org.uk/php/brewery/723I think the Cockerel/courage link is just confusion.

There's a very interesting pic of the Golden Cock in Victorian times, before the present building, and some interesting comments - including one from someone whose grandparents owned the pub;http://www.leodis.net/display.aspx?reso ... Y=FULLThis photo and the one in the previous post have been taken from an almost identical spot 100+ years apart.
