I doubt I would have ever spotted this Bench Mark (BM) by chance if I had not known from a map that it might be there. It is a little inside the Angel Inn Yard coming in from Briggate. I took the photos on June 30 2016. The first shows the BM. The second shows its general location just to the right of the intriguing bricked in door/cellar entrance/or whatever it was (sorry for the poor quality of that photo but it was hard in the narrow passage there to take a better positioned view to show the location). The third photo is just a general view that I hope may be of interest as it was not taken near the BM. It shows a scene looking up to Lands Lane from by the Angel Inn (that is just off on the left) and was taken at 12:00 but there was nobody sitting out then!

For those who like a challenge spotting a Bench Mark (BM) this BM will provide that! It was only knowing from old maps that there may be a BM at the site that got me looking and boy was it hard to spot! I'm almost certain that a very badly eroded very old BM is visible (just!) in the photo. The horizontal line across the top of the BM seems clear (though it does seem longer than normally seen on BMs, perhaps due to an erosion effect) but the arrow part beneath the horizontal line is hard to decipher. The BM is on the side of The Horse and Trumpet (H&T) pub on The Headrow where an short old entry/exit is from the City Varieties. A BM is marked at the spot on an 1891 map I've seen and one is marked on an 1850 map though that may or may not have been on what was then the H&T. I took the photos on July 5 2016. The first is a close-up of the BM (just above the dark material) and the second shows its location on the H&T with the City Varieties entry/exit on the right.

Is this the end of the story ...or the beginning of a legend?

Thanks for that map buffaloskinner :).

I wonder what were (still are?) the 'Stones' on Swan Street?

Cobbles? Swan Street still is cobbled although I'd have thought in 1891 most streets would be cobbles?

Hi tyke bhoy :).

That it did refer to the cobblestoned street does seem possible. I note on the map that where it states 'Stones' there are 2 bits that seem to protrude from a building that itself protrudes onto Swan Street, so I wonder if there were once some stones there that had some particular historical significance? Old maps can be very interesting!
