I took this photo today (Nov 25 2011) of an interesting building at the side of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal near the centre of Leeds. It shows some now badly worn wording of which I can only definitely make out "Mediums" and "Britain". There is though at the top of the building a very clear change to its structure at some stage. The blob on the lower will be a rain drop, as it was raining slightly when I took the photo! Apologies if (as I suspect likely) that this building has been a subject of a SL thread in the past but it hard to do a search and I did not fancy looking through the 41 current pages in the 'Signs of old Leodis' thread.

I believe it's an old haulage company sign. It would have been quite a stunner in its time (how sad does that sound! :-D)

It does look like it would have been impressive. The change to the structure of the building is intriguing as the shape of the old roof (?) that is built on does look strange! Edit added Nov 26 2011. I now wonder if the building was not extended above an odd shaped roof older building? I wonder rather if an old building with that odd roof was attached to the side of the building in the photo but was demolished and what is seen today is the remains of what were attached. If so though all of the lower lettering on the building must have been added after the demolition. Mind you, the building in the photo does also have an odd shaped roof! It's intriguing (well it is to me).

The word on the lower line appears to be "Tobacco" - I wonder if it was some kind of importer's warehouse or similar ??
There's nothing like keeping the past alive - it makes us relieved to reflect that any bad times have gone, and happy to relive all the joyful and fascinating experiences of our own and other folks' earlier days.

LeodianYou don't say exactly where the warehouse is, but , looking at google it would seem likely that it is set back from globe road near the railway bridge over the canal. In about that position on Globe road, the 1916 Kellys lists W.HTturner & Co, cigar manufacturers. Looks likely to me.Next door is listed Samuel Gosling tobacco Twister. Would this be breaking tobacco leaves into shreds?

Thanks Blakey, chemimike and geoffb. The location that I took the photo is where it is thought. The building is that next to the canal in this Google view being a little above and right of the red location tab. http://www.google.com/maps?q=GLOBE+ROAD ... 18&vpsrc=6

This photo shows a view (but without the building that is just off to the right) looking to the Canal Wharf area. That area was new to me as I was close to getting run over by an unexpetced car coming out (at speed) from a covered area (? part of the Dark Arches there) to cross the canal. I cannot have been to that particular area of the Dark Arches before as none of it seemed familiar!
