The photo (taken November 16 2011) shows what is a recently laid sign in Victoria Gardens. It does though already seem to be showing signs of wear (as well as the remains of the ubiquitous gum and bird droppings) so I wonder how long it will last. I think it is slate, but if it is metal it could be a question of how long before it gets pinched by thieves!

This photo (taken November 16 2011) shows a sign that may have been there since 2005 but if so I don't recall ever seeing it before!

This photo (taken November 16 2011) shows the wording 'Victoria Gardens' in the paving slabs near to Calverley Street. It was however awkward to photograph to get all the wording in, which is why it is not clear in the photo (no doubt someone can get a better photo). The wording must be recent as it is in a very obvious position and I only recently saw it. There does not seem to be a corresponding wording at the Cookridge Street side, so perhaps at Calverley Street is to be the only such wording.

The 'You are rock' has been around for a while now. No idea what it's about though.

The "You are a rock" paving slab was part of the Mene Mene project in 2005, which took biblical phrases and put them in public places. Nearer the cenotaph was a standing stone which was installed at the same time as the quote on the slab, so I assumed it was the "rock" in question.I remember a direction sign in the Albion Street area which included a pointer saying "Go throw yourself into the sea" (not the most cheerful statement!), which was part of the same project. Some information on the project can be found on its website.http://ww.axisweb.org/artwork.aspx?workid=36288

Your mention of the slab reminded me of a thread I started on 19-Sep-2010. That thread (titled 'The stone pillar in Victoria Gardens') was based on some information I got from a member of staff at the nearby Henry Moore centre and what I then found from that in an internet search. If the information was correct then the pillar was there before 2005, but in view of your date I now wonder if the pillar is related to the project I wrote about then. This is the link to my thread http://www.secretleeds.co.uk/forum/Mess ... eadID=2706

Now you've made me think! I thought the pillar appeared at the same time as the slab, but I was always puzzled why they were some distance from each other, so it may be that the quote on the slab drew my attention to the pillar, which had actually been there for some time in line with your information.

Hi Tasa. When I made that thread of mine about the pillar I had done some internet searching but it was extremely difficult to find relevant information and though I thought what I had posted was correct I was never absolutely certain that it was. You could still therefore be correct about the relationship between the slab and the pillar.
