Leeds pre worboys signs

I seem to remember them beimg there years. The distance does refer to what's behind you and what's to come. The one on the way into leeds has the distance ro ilkley at the bottom. Why ilkley?

The Horsforth signs are pretty close to the boundaries of Horsforth urban district so I'm guessing they were put there by the old council. A quick Google suggests what's now the A65 started off as the Kirkstall, Ilkley and Shipley turnpike trust road (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/nra/ ... ?ID=O68015) so it was probably the end points of that. The toll road opened in 1827 and I'd be interested to see what Kirkstall and Horsforth looked like before it was built, but the oldest maps on old-maps.co.uk only go back to the mid 1850s.
