Carvings at Adel Cragg

There are some extremely old carvings on the stones at Adel Crag if you look very closely. Some of them even have dates.

Following a very muddy walk I did today (Jan 1 2012) in Adel Wood area I had thought of starting a thread about names/dates on Adel Crag, but I then found this thread.I took the photo today at Adel Crag. It shows the date 1902 and a name (? O Scruton VP). There is an odd carving to the right that seems to consist of letters, numbers and symbols. A date (? 1983) with a name can also be seen near the 1902 dated carving.There are other dates/names carved elsewhere on the Crag but they are mainly badly eroded (or recent simple scratchings of names/dates). I will look closer some time to see if there are other old but legible ones.

This photo was taken today at Adel Crag and shows a carving with eroded initials and a date (1965 ?). If 1965 the carving is only 47 years old so not that old, but at least an attempt was made to make a good carving rather than a simple scratching of the rock surface.

Apparently the forms of Adel Cragg were very influential on Henry Moore.
